In the present paper, the author endeavours to explain the role of a woman’s beauty and female body in the artistic code of the writer’s works. Even in Chekhov’s early literary texts, there can be found examples of the use of woman’s portrait as a component of his main characters, both men and women contribute in a peculiar way to the overall psychological portrayal of a human being. This extraordinary pictorial device employed by the author of The Bride determines, to a large extent, the specific character of his literary output.

The paper deals with issues of the female body and the phenomenon of nudity in the Islamic gender discourse. It defines which parts of the body should be covered according to Islamic orthopraxy. Hundreds of years, Islamic polemic and debates have focused on the issue of veiling a woman's face in Muslim societies. Islamic feminists look into the basic texts of Islam in context of real life situations. They point out that no religious texts support the veiling of the face, on the other hand, they consider the wearing of the hijab as a symbol of personal freedom. The paper follows the issues from a male and female perspective, i. e. Islamic scholars and jurists versus Islamic feminists.
