Suzanne of Babylonia is poetic composition, a kind of occasional poetry. We recognize in inspectional reading that the poet breaks traditional scheme of occasional poems of felicitation type. We consider the poem as an artistic jewel in the Slovak literature from the turn of the 18th - 19th centuries. It shows a mosaic of number of detailed artistic artefacts in both figurativeness and non traditional composition. Tablic made an experiment with structure, composition, and also with a poem length. He used unusual motifs and pictures and non traditional verse and rhythmic scheme. His auctorial approach is remarkable in many ways. Tablic's auctorial strategy is mapped in the text and it could help to get a deeper insight into textual meaning as well as into a kind of influence on further development of Slovak literature in the period of the turn of the 18th - 19th centuries. It is possible that just this sort of writing made space for Tablic to use specific, in our literary context still non traditional literary methods, although they were quite common in the western European countries in that time.

Submitted paper is aimed to present an overview of visual imagery used in the television advertising of pharmaceutical products. With brief description of the nature of television adverts, persuasive means and figurativeness the paper further introduces the possibilities of visual imagery in advertising. The focus is mainly on metaphors, personification (seen as a subtype of metaphor), simile and hyperbole. These are the most used means to persuade percipients of television adverts in general. As demonstrated on chosen examples, these figurative means work fine in the television adverts of pharmaceutical products as well – especially personification of bacteria, viruses, phlegm just as symptoms, vitamins and medicines; metaphors of fight/war between illness and medicines; similes of tangles and crumps; hyperboles of symptoms and recovery etc. Examples with short description of advert (story, scene, narrative) and analysis of figures used are provided to support a better understanding of the topic.

Language always reflects the life of a certain society. Proverbs, which are the product of folk literature, are closely related to the thinking of the community. In the 20th century it was the city and city lifestyle that took over the dominating role in the society, and this fact has left its mark also on proverbs and sayings. The frequency of their occurrence has dropped and their form has undergone transformations changing their original meaning. Proverbs, the fruit of folk literature closely related to country life, are slowly disappearing in their original form from our lives. Several types of transformations they have undergone have deprived them of the original aesthetic and moral values.

The article deals with metaphor and its use within common and poetic language. It describes its functions and gives basic distinctions between the poetic, narrative and scientific language in as far as figurativeness and non-linguistic components are concerned. The overlapping points are, to a lesser or greater extent, represented by metaphors, even without human mind realizing this fact. The attention is paid also to context and connotations. The author is, in her work, concerned with Russia and USSR picture and stereotypes outside Russian cultural area, and, therefore, she gives a few examples of how metaphors are used to describe one of the periods of the history of this country.
