The speaker began by talking about Ch. Bally, the founder of functional stylistics, and then he discussed how his students, J. Marouzeau and M. Cressot elaborated on Bally's legacy. Following a temporary setback, stylistics underwent a new period of upswing, as the speaker demonstrated by two examples. First, he discussed the yield of a conference on stylistics held late in 1991 at Sorbonne (cf. Qu'est-ce que le style? Ed. by Georges Molinié and Pierre Cahné, Paris, 1994). Second, he noted the fact that M. Cressot's 'Le style et ses techniques' (1947) appeared in a 13th edition in 1991. Then he gave a detailed analysis of whatever Laurence James changed in that edition and what he added to Cressot's original discussion. The talk concluded by stating that functional stylistics is capable of renascence and can absorb many results of more recent approaches without the danger of eclecticism.

The article considers the question of the correlation of the subject and research methodology of functional stylistics and discourse analysis (primarily French tradition of discourse analysis) . It takes into account the change of modern linguistics from a structural paradigm to a functional one. It states that the compared subjects refer to speech studies (speech linguistics) and account for the process of speech activity and its extra-linguistic factors. It also proposes the definition of 'discourse'. The emphasis is that unlike traditional stylistics which P. Serio distanced away from, modern works on functional stylistics are close to discourse analysis.

Functional stylistics finds its origin in the works of Czech and Russian scholars of the 20-30s of the last century. In spite of great discoveries in its methodology, until the 1960s the functional-stylistic theory as an integrated and conceptual system has not been created. M.N. Kozhina's theory has had a great impact on the formation and verification of the functional-stylistic theory, her works on the theory of speech and the linguistic stylistics of the second half of the 60s and the beginning of the 70s of the 20th century were the first to reveal traces of development of linguistics from the systemic-structural to the functional-communicative paradigm. They were one of the earliest conceptions of the discourse analysis. Within this period M.N. Kozhina defined the main concepts and methods of functional stylistics, including the concept of functional style of speech, defined on the basis of extralinguistic factors. She regarded peculiarities of the main speech styles, as a result of realization of language peculiarities, typical for each communicative sphere, and the formation of stylistic-speech system. She created the classification of extralinguistic factors and the following classification of functional styles and their less varieties within the framework of functional theory. M.N.Kozhina founded the necessity of the interscientific research of styles and suggested definite patterns of their objective and stylistic-statistical analysis. These theoretical assumptions were later applied into the historical and comparative stylistics. In the 80-90s of the 20th century M.N.Kozhina considerably developed her theory. It resulted in the creation of one of the most interesting and influential trends, i.e. the functional stylistics of text. The subject of the research became a stylistic organization of the whole text as the representative of a text type, regarded within the integrity of its speech external and sense aspects, as well as of a wide cognitive, communicative and social context. She worked out the conception of special text categories, called functional and semantic-stylistic, and put out new ideas concerning cognitive and communicative factors, as form structuring components of the semantic structure of the text. The recent works of M.N. Kozhina deal with general questions of functional stylistics and with the working out of the foundations of the theory of speech as an integrated theory.

The article presents the main trends in the research of scholars of the Perm school of functional stylistics based on the programs of speech linguistics and fundamental principles of functional stylistics, worked out by M. N. Kozhina. The authoress analyses the fundamental concepts of the school which include the evolution of the main ideas of the functional stylistic, worked out by M. N.Kozhina, as the basis and pattern for further investigations. She also examines the works of Kozhina's followers (E. A. Bazhenova, N. V. Dfanilevskaya, L. R. Duskaeva, M. P. Kotiurova, V. A. Salimovskii, T. B. Trosheva and other) concerning the dynamism of text formation in scientific sphere with the use of the interdisciplinary approach (connected with the psychology of thought and speech, theory of science, cognitive science). They also include the analysis of the textual categories of dialogic, accentual, hypothetical concepts the problems of genre formation, interaction of sender and addressee in communicative cognitive process, and the problems of the historical stylistic.

The article reviews the correlation between the discourse theory and the theory of functional stylistics. Based on the similarity of the most important methodological principles of these linguistic directions, the authoress suggests to integrate them in the framework of the discourse and stylistic approach. This approach is applied to scientific texts. The discourse component of this approach allows to identify extralinguistic factors of scientific communication; the stylistic component allows to discover the linguistic devices that represent the standard content of a scientific paper. She develops the concept of epistemic situation and considers the latter to be discourse metamodel of a scientific texts, which determines its stylistic peculiarity. The structure of epistemic situation is described with regard to the four interconnected aspects of cognitive activity: ontological, methodological, reflective, communicative-pragmatic. The authoress reveals the content of each aspects and analyses their influence on the sense structure of a scientific text. She considers the subtext to be a structural element of the text and describes the primary subtexts: the subtext of a new and old knowledge, the subtext of evaluation, the subtext of recipient and the author, etc.

The paper is focused on different aspects of the correlation between stylistics and types of speech culture. It is argued that only the highest type of speech culture, common to people who have a perfect command of all language varieties, is being studied by any kind of stylistics. In other words, stylistics always deals exclusively with the accepted model of good speech. The first part of the paper concentrates on the essence of three branches of stylistics: functional stylistics, literary stylistics, and practical stylistics. Functional stylistics investigates a functional differentiation of the standard language ('literaturnyj yazik' in Russian). Practical stylistics is aimed at choosing the best synonym. Literary stylistics analyses fictional texts whose authors make a maximum use of language resources. Only people of the fully functional type of speech culture can cope with the above-mentioned tasks. The second part of the paper is devoted to a study of the peculiarities of manifestation of the speech culture markers in different language varieties. A close analysis of extensive factual data has led the author to the conclusion that speech culture markers are most active in public and fiction discourse and least active in standardized documents and casual everyday conversation.
