Klimov et al. On unrealized screen adaptations of “The Master and Margarita” This article attempts to outline the history of the major planned but ultimately unrealized film adaptations of The Master and Margarita. The projects discussed cover a period of about fifty years, ranging from the late 1960s to the 1920s. The film projects described were planned mainly in Soviet (Mosfilm) and Russian (Mars Media) studios and in Hollywood studios (including Columbia and Lucasfilm), with the participation of Russian, American and European filmmakers. The article focuses largely on sketching a picture of specific design and production activities within these projects. A separate section is devoted to adaptation strategies, with a particular focus on the Klimov brothers’ screenplay.

Klimow i inni. O niezrealizowanych ekranizacjach „Mistrza i Małgorzaty” W niniejszym artykule podjęto próbę zarysowania historii najważniejszych planowanych, lecz ostatecznie niezrealizowanych ekranizacji Mistrza i Małgorzaty. Omówione projekty obejmują okres około pięćdziesięciu lat i rozciągają się w czasie od późnych lat 60. XX w. do lat 20. XXI w. Opisywane przedsięwzięcia filmowe planowane były głównie w wytwórniach radzieckich (Mosfilm) i rosyjskich (Mars Media) oraz w studiach hollywoodzkich (m.in. Columbia i Lucasfilm), przy udziale twórców rosyjskich, amerykańskich i europejskich. Artykuł skupia się w dużej części na szkicowaniu obrazu konkretnych działań projektowych i producenckich w obrębie tychże przedsięwzięć. Osobne miejsce poświęcone jest adaptacyjnym strategiom adaptacyjnym, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem scenariusza braci Klimowów.

Dark memories in the provincial words of Ingmar Bergman's Fanny and Alexander and Federico Fellini's Amarcord This article about Federico Fellini’s Amarcord (1973) and Ingmar Bergman’s Fanny and Alexander (1982) concerns one aspect of the directors’ childhood memories, namely how authoritarian institutions are used to disrupt otherwise fairly idyllic and nostalgic lives and worlds. The films blend detailed memories with playful fantasies, combine experiences of the directors’ alter egos, Titta and Alexander, with rituals of family and larger communities in the provincial cities of Rimini and Uppsala. In each film, bitter memories are given a central role. This article explores the similarities of these bitter memories, as they are imagined in the mature auteurs’ last exceptionally successful films.
