During Xth and XIth century the Byzantine Empire was one of the strongest states in the Levant. In mentioned period the emperors undertook numerous military campaigns, both in order to expand the borders of the empire and restitute their authority on once lost lands. Due to its prestige and wealth the Empire was a favorable destination for foreigners, including mercenaries. As a result, in Byzantium one could meet warriors of a very diversified ethnic descent. The presence of numerous foreigners could not escape the attentions of Byzantines themselves, who in time formed a distinctive view concerning those newcomers. Among many mercenaries two managed to obtain extraordinary status and step out in the eyes of Byzantine citizens. The first group were the Varangians, who at the end of Xth century formed the famous emperor`s guard. The second group of mercenaries were warrior from the West, usually referred to as the Franks. The main aim of this paper is to examine the genesis of mentioned warriors in Byzantium and the roots of stereotypes attached to them.

This article will present the issue of the pedigree position and parental rights, which in the centuries-old tradition have been attended by the Franconian aristocrats. These noble and respectable matrons, though subject to the ruthless power of their husbands, and also representing the natural sexus inferior, had, as it turns out, a kind of power of attorney to take an open voice regarding the moral education of their own sons and successors. These women obtained the status of Christian matres familias. At the same time, they did not lack the conviction of the mission performed for the good of the entire family. From the Kingdom of the Franks, get throught two written testimonies of the so-called maternal educational struggles. Unique evidence of maternal effort that became a sacrifice to God. Representing the seventh-century Herchenefred left three instructive letters for her son Dezyderiusz.Dhuoda from Septymania, living in the middle of the 9th century, wrote a long textbook of right living, which addressed her firstborn Wilhelm. Two aristocratic mothers and two preserved unique female sources, written for sons and successors. These testimonies in a detailed way provide us today with answers to questions related to the status of mothers of that time - the mothers of the Franconian families. What was their strength and allowed for the formulation of courageous and arbitrary admonitions directed to their male heirs? In the article, the author will attempt to approximate the definition of the Franconian mater familiae, which, apart from the ancient tribal tradition, also consisted of adopted biblical and patristic pedagogy.

During twelve years St. Methodius build up Slavonic Church in Central Europe. His position was a singulary difficult one. He had to contend with problems caused by Franks. The Frankish clergy did everything possible to undermine his authority: their resentment of his archiepiscopal powers and their dogged opposition to the Slavonic liturgy now combined with a theological grievance, which they loudly voiced both in Moravia and in Rome. The Frankish Church now firmly committed to the doctrine of the filioque. It had already arisen in 867, when patriarch Photius denounced the Franks for spreading filioque in Bulgaria. Now in Moravia, between 879 and 885, filioque flared up afresh, embittering the last years of Methodius’ life. The Church of Rome, though it did not formally accept filioque until the early eleventh century, had already begun to adopt it unofficially. The Byzantine Church strongly objected to the filioque, partly on the grounds that any alternation to the Creed had been expressly forbidden by the ecumenical councils, and partly because it believed to be theologically erroneous. Methodius, who, despite his position as papal legate, remained a Byzantine in outlook, could not fail to regard this doctrine, accepted by Frankish subordinate clergy as heretical. The filioque was to become the basic theological issue in the medieval controversies between the Byzantine and Roman Churches.

The Crusades were the first circumstance to demonstrate the cultural religious differences that divided the Germanized West from the Byzantine East. The barbarization of the West had ushered in a feudal military society which sought to justify its habitual pasttime. The Germanic code of civalry gave preeminence to the military hero; in this regard, the papacy itself was barbarized; there was nothing more disconcerning to the Christian of the Byzantine empire than the papal warfere and the idea of Crusade. The Byzantines, in contrast, did not consider death in battle glorious; nor did they they believe that being killed in the field by the infidel was martyrdom. The canons of the Orthodox Church stated that any one guilty of kiling in war must refrain for three years from taking Holy Communion as a necessary sign of true repentance.
