The primary purpose of the study is to approach Štúr’s method of reflection on the category of truth and its cognition. Despite the fact that he did not write any comprehensive philosophical treatise devoted to this philosophical issue, Štúr’s various articles and lectures offer the possibility of reconstructing his position on the given question. The research of this issue within the framework of the research of the history of Slovak philosophical thought is connected to the analysis of the reflection of European philosophical influences in Štúr’s thinking, in which, in addition to the influence of authors from the environment of German classical philosophy, the influence of the Russian circle of Slavophiles was also manifested. One of the basic positions of the Slavophiles, on the basis of which they defined a categorical differentiation between Western and Slavic philosophical thought, were precisely the different epistemological tradition. The study approximates the given context of Štúr’s approach to the investigation of reality, on the basis of which we can more comprehensively understand the specific nature of Štúr’s political program, his various ideological starting points and approaches to political issues.

The present contribution examines the philosophical and gnoseological position of Symeon the New Theologian (949 – 1022), which could be described as a mystical realism. Under this term, we may understand the true, objective view and expression of the ideal object of transcendent reality by way of special means. We shall endeavour to justify that this gnoseological approach of Symeon is compatible with the Orthodox dogmatic theology while fully respecting its boundaries. We plan to point to the fact that Symeon´s theory of knowledge was alien to every extreme and that he, on the contrary, occupied a dialectical position that could be characterized as a golden mean between two extremes – on the one hand, he was a convinced gnoseological optimist, on the other hand, he was a conscious agnostic. The prime aim of this study is to clarify that mystical realism perceived in this way represents an authentic way of Orthodox gnoseology, which is based on the actual experience of the Uncreated (God) perceived by His creation (man).

The article aims to discuss issues related to immortality and to the genesis of the human soul. Augustine’s ontological stance on man supports the immortality of the soul. The author justifies his views by referring to the Holy Bible and to the vital functions of man. Also, he points to the dissimilarity between sensual and mental cognition. What speaks for immortality of the soul is the evidence of the lack of a quantitative element, as well as the concepts of truth and life. The foregoing argumentation gives grounds to believe that a human being remains a unique whole of physical and spiritual unity.

The article is devoted to analysis of the conditions and problems of formation of sociological epistemology – the doctrine about the process of cognition in sociology. The authors substantiate the existence of the need of sociological science in studying its own process of cognition, dependence of the methods of settling the cognitive epistemological problems on the reveal of fundamental peculiarities of gnoseological nature of sociology. Gnoseological content and methodological role in sociology of the principle of reflection, the principle of understanding and principle of constructing, which determine to a considerable extent the formation of sociological epistemology are analyzed.
