The article is devoted to analysis of the grounded theory strategy. In the introduction, the leading approaches of qualitative research are compared in accordance with two criteria: 1) the parental disciplines; 2) the narrative form. The various options of the grounded theory approach are examined. In the first part of the article, the procedural particulars of the grounded theory strategy are considered. They are: the theoretical sensitivity; the process and kinds of coding; the theoretical sampling. The theoretical sensitivity includes: the insight capability, ability to interpret data, and identifying the really important facts. The coding is subdivided into three kinds, such as opened, axial and selective ones. The application of the each kind of coding corresponds to the degree of a readiness of theoretical statements. The theoretical sampling consists in selection of respondents possessing the information pertaining to considerable from the researchers' point of view aspects of the empirical reality. These aspects, in turn, are to serve as a basis of theoretically relevant notions. In the second part of the article, an example of qualitative research rested on the grounded theory approach is presented. A subject matter of the research is the phenomenon of full-time students' study under the limited time conditions.

This article presents briefly how the author conducts image analysis of citizen journalism. The research involves sociological methodology called Grounded Theory (to be more specific — its visual, constructivist version). The author not only describes the following stages of the project (from open coding to post-research literature review), but also indicates the benefits and drawbacks of the approach. Futhermore, the Grounded Theory is considered as a useful way applicable to critical discourse studies, as this field especially seems to require some new, unconventional methods for the well-equipped researcher’s toolbox.

According to studies on family leisure time, positive experiences with family members are the most important motivation factor for family leisure activities. In their traditional role, museums are cultural mediators, sources of information and research. However, as the needs of consumers with regards to museums are changing, institutions should instead focus on the opportunity to participate, learn and experience. The aim of our study is to identify key elements that make a museum family friendly and to define criteria for this designation. The framework was constructed based on the analysis of in-depth interviews with families with constructive grounded theory. The study’s findings highlight the need for museums to pay attention to families not only during their visit but also in the preparation and follow-up phases. The managerial implications for museums that would like to be family-friendly are discussed and solutions proposed.

This paper outlines my concerns with Qualitative Data Analysis' (QDA) numerous remodelings of Grounded Theory (GT) and the subsequent eroding impact. I cite several examples of the erosion and summarize essential elements of classic GT methodology. It is hoped that the article will clarify my concerns with the continuing enthusiasm but misunderstood embrace of GT by QDA methodologists and serve as a preliminary guide to novice researchers who wish to explore the fundamental principles of GT.

Increasing occurrence of unmarried cohabitation as the first form of a co-residential union of the young generation in the post-revolutionary period in Slovakia and its preferring to former direct entering into marriage union creates a space for variable interpretations. On one hand, there is a tendency to view the phenomenon as a manifestation of the value-change in the population. On the other one, it is argued by postponing or rejecting marriage as a result of worsened social-economic conditions. Presented qualitative research with its conclusions primarily supports the statement about cultural aspects of transformation of the society, although the legitimacy of the second course of interpretation cannot be completely ignored. The results are presented in a broader contextual frame. In accordance with the grounded theory method the author discovers a decision-making process of entering into an unmarried cohabitation. It is identified as a process of autonomous-pressure manoeuvring in the context of different intensity of social and situational pressure, faced by actors in the crucial moment. Consequently, the author constructs four cohabiting types – independent initiators, stimulated individualists, resisting autonomists and reformed traditionalists.

The main goal of this paper was to reconstruct the process of constructing the identity of a mountain rescuer. The author was interested in capturing its course and finding the factors that might have some influence on it. In the first part, the theoretical and methodological context of a research, that was the base of the paper, would be presented, including the presentation of grounded theory as a research strategy that was used. Main aspects of the process - with its main stages, dimensions and subprocesses would be described in details in the empirical chapter.

This article shows theoretical and practical implications of a research style called Grounded Theory. The paper documents the process of generating theory from qualitative data. The emphasis is put on diverse levels of abstraction experienced by a researcher while analyzing data. An everyday item has been used to help to demonstrate the steps of reflection while executing qualitative analysis. The item is a cemetery bag - an old fashioned brownish bag containing things that attach significance. Therefore, it becomes a signifier for ageing, heterosexuality and gender roles. The bag and the thoughts it triggers help researchers to reflect on their hidden coding mechanisms, which play a vital part in qualitative research. The article concludes with showing several steps in the coding process of Grounded Theory, along with how categories find their way into a paradigmatic model.

This is the first sociological study of development of organic farming in Poland, based on interprative paradigm and methodology of grounded theory. The basis of the study form 27 narrative and unstructured interviews with organic farmers from many regions of Poland, direct observation and content analysis of publications on organic farming. The central question is about the essence of organic farming. Is it a profession like any other or a social movement? What are the distinctive factors that can help in differantiating an organic farmer from the 'conventional' one? What factors form the social world of organic farming, what kind of arenas of disputes emerge?

The paper is an attempt to describe social world of pigeons breeders. Basic aim was to look into particular aspects which constitute this specific social group in the light of social interactionism and theory of social worlds. The central issues were therefore values within this world, legitimating of commitment in breeders work, the process of becoming pigeons breeder and relations between breeders and their birds. All these issues were described in a wider context of conditions influencing pigeons breeding. Presented findings are based on empirical research conducted among pigeons breeders from one region of Poland between 2006 and 2007. Collected empirical data were analyzed and interpreted according to the rules of grounded theory methodology.

This article is based on a case study conducted in an Italian primary school where the interactions between a sightless girl (named Jasmine, aged 8) and her classmates were extensively observed. The initial aim was to understand and describe the problems encountered by the sightless pupil, who acted in a social, organizational and physical environment which was not designed for handicapped people. However, other theoretical issues emerged during the research. The main finding was that sightlessness seems socially and organizationally constructed before it becomes a biological/physical handicap. The organizational processes through which the blindness is slowly and routinely constructed were extensively described.

The deliberations undertaken in the article are a fragment of a broader research project into the social and cultural position of the modern male. This issue poses the question about the extent and activity areas in which men presenting themselves relate to traditional characteristics of the personal model of the male, and those in which one can find new elements brought about by contemporary social, economic and cultural reality. The starting point for empirical analysis is marked by two basic issue - efficiency and auto-presentation, treated here as sensitising ideas. The main focus is on one of two most important efficiency factors-activities, divided into general and particular ones. On their basis, quality analysis of visual material is conducted, which constitutes the starting point in searching for and diagnosing changes as well as constructing the contemporary concept of manhood.

The main goal of this paper is to reconstruct the process of becoming a poet with its most important subprocesses (re-constructing of identity, career stages). The project was based on field research conducted via participant observation and qualitative interviews. The paper is based on the symbolic interactionism as a teoretical frame and the grounded theory as a methodological procedure used for the analyse of collected data.

Grounded theory is a procedure based on empirical data, elaborated to create meso theories generated through systematic methodological steps from the data. In his study the author present this cognitive and methodological approach which is little known in Hungary and is generally used in qualitative research. He also covers the historical changes and development trends of this methodology, which is of particular significance not only as providing information on the history of science but also because it sheds light on the differing paradigms of scientific investigation.

This article concentrates on the development and interests of theoretical (general) sociology in the Czech Republic during the period 1990–2010. It examines the consequences of the postmodern influence and attempts to establish a ‘critical sociology’. Its main focus is summarising the key books and texts on the relevant theoretical areas (historical sociology, theoretical foundations of qualitative sociology, grounded theory, feminism, gender studies, and sociology of politics, etc.) The author sees the possible advancement of theoretical sociology in the growing interest of young scholars in general sociology and in critical sociology (often inspired by neo-Marxism). The article is also concerned with ‘sociological rhetoric’ and the essay form of writing.
