This paper proposes a critical review of Geodesign methods and techniques which can be used to carry out collaborative design in participatory processes. The case study of a Geodesign workshop held in 2016 Cagliari (Italy) shows how it is possible to involve teams of members of the community in what is perhaps the most critical phase of a spatial planning process that is putting knowledge into action through the collaborative design of future change alternatives, and their choice based on negotiation. In addition, a discussion of further potential of the Geodesign approach in public participation is discussed with reference to both knowledge creation and community value and preferences accounting.

The paper presents case studies of geodesign and collaborative planning in the context of important cultural areas in Minas Gerais state, Brazil, “Pampulha” and “Iron Quadrangle”. The first area is at urban scale and has recently received UNESCO recognition due to Oscar Niemeyer’s work, and the second is at regional scale and of qualified landscape, important historical and cultural values, in addition to abundant natural resources (mainly minerals). The results allow a reflection on the role of interoperability and visualization applications to favor mental maps and better conditions in participatory planning, based on the methodology of Geodesign.

This paper discusses the role of visualization in Geodesign methodology consideringits applications in the case study of the region of Pampulha in Belo Horizonte,Minas Gerais, Brazil. In order to consider the opinion of the participants, their effortswere recorded in different steps of the process, at different stages of Geodesign iterations,and different possibilities of visualization were tested. The methodology of Geodesignwas applied in different applications and with different tools. The goal was to determinewhether different techniques and tools used in the process of Geodesign contributed toimproved understanding of data and problem context, and to derive guidelines for improvedGeodesign techniques and tools.
