The author aims at presenting mercy in the letters of St. Paul in the aspect of the enriching relation of God towards man. He analyses the most representative texts, containing the semantic base: ἔλεος–ἐλεέω and οἰκτιρμός–οἰκτίρω. He takes the personal experience of God’s mercy in the apostle’s life as the starting point. Then, he attempts to deduce how it has influenced the development of the doctrine of mercy and how it has reflected in the practice of the Christian life. Finally, he enquires about the maturity of the Pauline doctrine of God’s mercy.

Autor stawia sobie za cel prezentację miłosierdzia w listach św. Pawła w aspekcie ubogacającej relacji Boga do człowieka. Poddaje analizie najbardziej reprezentatywne teksty, które zawierają bazę semantyczną: ἔλεος–ἐλεέω i οἰκτιρμός–οἰκτίρω. Punktem wyjścia czyni osobiste doświadczenie miłosierdzia Bożego w życiu apostoła. Następnie podejmuje próbę wnioskowania jak ono wpłynęło na rozwój nauki o miłosierdziu i jakie znalazło przełożenie na praktykę życia chrześcijańskiego. W końcu zadaje pytanie o dojrzałość Pawłowej nauki o Bożym miłosierdziu.

The goal of this contribution is to demonstrate the harmonious unity in God’s attributes. This includes justice which acts in absolute unity with God’s loving goodness. It is thus sometimes necessary for God to punish his creatures if their actions do not correspond to their knowledge of God’s love. Man has to experience being loved by God and respond by choosing freely to obey him.

Cieľom príspevku je predstaviť jednotu Božích atribútov v harmónii. Spravodlivosť patrí k Božím vyrovnaným vlastnostiam v absolútnej jednote s Božou milujúcou dobrotou. Táto skutočnosť nevylučuje, že niekedy Boh musí potrestať svoje stvorenie, ak ho človek nechce nasledovať podľa poznania Božej lásky v praktickom živote. Človek potrebuje zažiť, že je milovaný a odpovedať Bohu slobodne v poslušnosti.

This article is a re-edited text of the conference which was presented by the author. It discusses the problem of God’s justice in relation to an individual on the example of the Book of Job. The first part of the article starts with the question how difficult or even insignificant is to talk about God based on the Bible. The second part tries to demonstrate on the basis of the Book of Job in what way and how much great biblical texts have to offer both to believers and unbelievers.

Il presente articolo è una rielaborazione di una conferenza tenuta dall’autore. Il suo argomento è la questione della giustizia divina in contrapposizione alla situazione concreta dell’essere umano, prendendo come modello il testo del libro di Giobbe. Una prima parte si rivolge alla domanda, come mai sia diventato difficile e forse irrilevante parlare di Dio a partire della Bibbia. La seconda parte cerca di mostrare, a partire di una riflessione sul libro di Giobbe, in quale modo i grandi testi biblici abbiano ancora molto da dire ai credenti e ai non credenti.

Niniejszy artykuł jest przepracowanym na nowo tekstem konferencji wygłoszonej przez autora. Porusza problem Bożej sprawiedliwości w odniesieniu do konkretnej sytuacji istoty ludzkiej, biorąc za przykład tekst Księgi Hioba. Pierwsza część artykułu wychodzi od pytania, jak trudne, a może nawet nieznaczące, stało się mówienie o Bogu oparte na Biblii. Druga część artykułu, z kolei, stara się ukazać na podstawie Księgi Hioba, w jaki sposób i jak niemało wielkie teksty biblijne mają jeszcze do powiedzenia wierzącym i niewierzącym.

In the present article, the author indicates the theme of God’s justice as a unifying thread of the Letter to the Romans. The analysis of the issue starts from a general overview of the idea of justice in the Greco-Roman culture, in the Old and New Testament. Next, the author presents the overall structure of the Letter to the Romans supplied with the distribution of the vocabulary of justice. The core of the article is the analysis of the differentiated argumentative parts of the letter (Rom 1–4; 5–8; 9–11) with the special attention paid to the issue of God’s justice. Paul presents it as the power of God that saves the humanity from the incoming judgment (Rom 1–4), as the giver of new life in the Spirit and freedom for the believers (Rom 5–8), and as the creative will of God that will not cease until it brings everybody, including Israel, to salvation (Rom 9–11). At every stage of his argument, the apostle stresses that throughout the whole history of mankind God’s justice remained faithful to its original plan of salvation revealed and disclosed in the Old Testament.
