This paper briefly shows how Summa Theologiae is composed. We may notice that the structure of Summa results from the careful and precise consideration, further, it perfectly embodies the Scholastic mode for assesing arguments. The remarkable achievement of Aquinas is to demonstrate, through the structure of intellectual reasoning, the rational structure of the universe. Universal idea, reason understood as a principle for a methodological inquiry, serves as the overall rule both for intellectual and aesthetic work. We find its expression in the Medieval architecture, especially in Gothic cathedrals.

Tekst stanowi drugą z trzech części raportu dotyczącego sondażu okulograficznego przeprowadzanego w 2017 r. w Katedrze Historii Architektury, Sztuki i Techniki na Wydziale Architektury Politechniki Wrocławskiej. Badania dotyczyły charakterystyki zapoznawania się z zabytkowymi budowlami. Pierwsza część omawiała zarejestrowany przez autorów sposób zapoznawania się z głębią nawy głównej kościoła gotyckiego. Podobnie jak w poprzednim artykule, także w niniejszej pracy na potrzeby eksperymentu wykorzystano wizualizacje XIII- i XIV-wiecznych katedr francuskich. Autorów interesowało, na ile długość nawy głównej gotyckiej katedry przekłada się na percepcję całego układu oraz czy i kiedy obserwatorzy są bardziej skłonni do koncentracji swojej uwagi wzrokowej, identyfikując prezbiterium. Zjawisko, w którym wraz ze wzrostem długości nawy światyni wzrok człowieka jest znacznie mocniej przyciągany przez strefę prezbiterialną, nazywa się także efektem kościoła tunelowego.

This paper constitutes the second part of a three-part report considering an eyetracking survey that took place in 2017 at the Department of History of Architecture, Art and Technique at the Wrocław University of Science and Technology. The study focused on how people perceive historic buildings. The first part of the report discussed the way people perceive the depth of the nave of a Gothic church. In the second part the researchers were interested in how the length of the nave affects the perception of the entire layout of the church and in what circumstances the observers are most willing to pay attention to the area of the presbytery. The survey included the testing of the so-called tunnel church effect theory, according to which the longer the nave, the more attention is paid to the presbytery.

Katedra gotycka to przede wszystkim wielkie przedsięwzięcie teologiczne, w którym zarówno architektura, inżynieria, jak i estetyka podporządkowane są jednej myśli: ukazaniu poprzez atrybuty materialne tajemnic wiary, jej głębi i metafizycznego piękno. Architektura katedr gotyckich miała nieco inne funkcje i cele niż współczesna sztuka sakralna. Nie była projektowana jako sztuczny, iluzoryczny świat, nie była formą ucieczki od codzienności. Dla człowieka średniowiecza katedra była realna w tym sensie, że określała to, co w jego życiu najważniejsze. Nie wynikała też z doraźnych potrzeb, lecz z ponadczasowych przesłanek, nie była iluzją, która miała na celu ucieczkę od prawdy, lecz określała jej sedno.

The Gothic cathedral is above all a great theological project in which both architecture, engineering and aesthetics are subordinated to one thought: to show the mysteries of faith, its depth and metaphysical beauty through material features. Moreover, the art of Gothic cathedrals had other functions and purposes than contemporary sacred art. It was not designed as an artificial, illusory world, it was not a form of escape from the ordinary. For a man of the Middle Ages, the cathedral was real in that it defined the most important things. It was not contractual, but stemmed from timeless premises; it was not an illusion aimed at escaping the truth, but defined is very core.
