In September 1819, Prussian War Minister Hermann von Boyen received a letter regarding the situation in the Kingdom of Poland. It was written by General Ludwig Gustav von Thile I, who conducted a factual analysis of the key elements of Poland’s military potential. The letter constitutes crucial evidence of the distrust that marked Polish-Prussian relations marked by distrust after 1815. The text studies Berlin’s perception of the Polish lands from a political and military perspective. It also confirms that foreign countries perceived the negative aspects of the policy pursued by Grand Duke Constantine.

We wrześniu 1819 r. na ręce pruskiego ministra wojny Hermanna von Boyen wpłynął list dotyczący sytuacji w Królestwie Polskim. Jego autorem był gen. Ludwig Gustav von Thile I, który dokonał rzeczowej analizy kluczowych elementów potencjału militarnego wschodniego sąsiada. List jest ważnym świadectwem naznaczonych nieufnością relacji polsko-pruskich po 1815 r. Tekst stanowi studium postrzegania ziem polskich przez Berlin z perspektywy politycznej i militarnej, jak również potwierdza dostrzeganie za granicą negatywnych aspektów polityki uprawianej przez wielkiego księcia Konstantego.

Artykuł skupia się na powieści Jana Czyńskiego Cesarzewicz Konstanty i Joanna Grudzińska, czyli Jakubini polscy, analizowanej w kontekście uformowanych w epoce polistopadowej romantycznych stereotypów kulturowych dotyczących relacji polsko-rosyjskich. Prezentując poszczególne wątki fabularne powieści (ambiwalencje otaczające postać księcia Konstantego, życie polityczne w Królestwie Polskim, opozycja patrioci–konformiści, działalność tajnych służb policyjnych w Warszawie), autorka dowodzi, że pamfletowy charakter powieści (skorelowany z osobistym zaangażowaniem politycznym Czyńskiego) czyni z niej instruktywne kompendium motywów składających się na obraz Rosji w polskim piśmiennictwie lokującym się w obrębie romantycznego paradygmatu.

The article focuses on the novel by Jan Czyński Cesarzewicz Konstanty i Joanna Grudzińska, czyli Jakubini polscy, analysed in the context of the Romantic cultural stereotypes concerning Polish-Russian relations formed after the November Uprising. While presenting the novel’s plot (the ambivalence surrounding the figure of Grand Duke Constantine, political life in the Kingdom of Poland, the opposition patriots vs. conformists, the operation of secret police services in Warsaw), the author proves that the pamphlet character of the novel (correlated with Czyński’s personal political involvement) makes it an instructive compendium of motifs constituting the image of Russia in Polish literature within the Romantic paradigm.
