Panegyric works and their connection with the Kyiv monasteries in the context of the relations between the Hetmanate and the Moscow kingdom in the early 18th century. The eulogies which are dedicated to Prince Alexander Menshikov and originate from the Kyiv monastery environment – in particular, the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and the Kyiv Brotherhood Monastery are discussed and compared in the article. The circumstances of the origin of these works, the peculiarities and motivation of the dedications, rhetorical figures and their significance in the respective historical and political context have also been analysed. Panegyrics were inscribed in the paradigm of Ukrainian-Russian relations in the early 18th century. A little-known work attributed to Theophanes Prokopovych is also published in the appendices.

Hereby article constitutes an attempt to present the figure of Jan Karol Chodkiewicz from the Supraśl line (1686–1712), the son of Jerzy Karol Chodkiewicz, the starost of Błudeń and Grand Quartermaster of Lithuania, and Marianna Tekla from the Naruszewicz family. The source base for Chodkiewicz’s biographical outline comprise materials stored in the National Archive in Kraków, at the Młynów Archive of the Chodkiewicz family. The variety of documents contained therein made it possible to reconstruct his biography as accurately as possible. From it emerges the figure of Jan Karol, who, orphaned by his father in childhood, was left to the care of his mother, his successive stepfathers and the guardians assigned to him by law, all of whom had possessive inclinations towards the Chodkiewicz estate. Despite this, he received a thorough education at Jesuit schools in both Vilnius and Warsaw during the period of political and military unrest that gripped the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during the Great Northern War (1700–1721). Due to poor health, he did not actively participate in the political and military sphere of the Polish-Lithuanian state, yet focused all his energy on ensuring the integrity and development of his homeland, for which he had to fight, also in court, and not only with his neighbours, but also with his own relatives as well. Chodkiewicz also managed to ensure the continuity of the Supraśl line, alas his first-born Adam Tadeusz, just like himself, was brought up fatherless from early childhood.

Artykuł stanowi próbę zaprezentowania postaci Jana Karola Chodkiewicza z linii supraskiej (1686–1712), syna starosty błudeńskiego i oboźnego wielkiego litewskiego Jerzego Karola Chodkiewicza oraz Marianny Tekli z Naruszewiczów, który do tej pory nie doczekał się żadnego szerszego opracowania naukowego. Podstawę źródłową szkicu biograficznego Chodkiewicza stanowią materiały przechowywane w Archiwum Narodowym w Krakowie, w zespole Archiwum Młynowskie Chodkiewiczów. Różnorodność znajdujących się w nim dokumentów pozwoliła na możliwie jak najdokładniejsze odtworzenie jego życiorysu. Z niego wyłania się postać Jana Karola, który osierocony przez ojca w dzieciństwie zdany był na opiekę swojej matki, kolejnych ojczymów i prawnie przydzielonych opiekunów, mających zaborcze zapędy względem dóbr Chodkiewiczowskich. Mimo to odebrał staranne wykształcenie w szkołach jezuickich w Wilnie i Warszawie w okresie niepokojów polityczno-militarnych targających Rzeczpospolitą podczas wielkiej wojny północnej (1700–1721). Odznaczając się słabym zdrowiem, nie angażował się w sposób aktywny na płaszczyźnie politycznej i militarnej państwa polsko-litewskiego, a całą swoją energię skupiał na zapewnieniu integralności i rozwoju swoich dóbr ojczystych, o co musiał toczyć boje, również na gruncie sądowym, nie tylko z sąsiadami, lecz także z własnymi krewnymi. Chodkiewiczowi udało się też zapewnić ciągłość linii supraskiej, jednak jego pierworodny Adam Tadeusz, tak samo jak on, od wczesnego dzieciństwa wychowywał się bez ojca.
