Intending to illustrate meanings attributed to color in the matter painting of Cracow, the author selected a specific time in that movement’s evolution: the year 1960. Her interpretation of the slogan “Color of Trace/ Trace of Color” comprises two practices involving the use of specific hues: the color of trace references the shades of material employed in the process of building the image-object; the trace of color refers to the specific polychromy ascribed to the composition, actual shades of materials employed notwithstanding; or minuscule markings within the image field, vestiges of the kapist perception of image, applied as ingredients intended to emphasise the composition’s expression or media of non-visual symbolism. The scrutiny of selected matter painting examples was expanded to include reflections by critics responding spontaneously to a wave of oeuvre by painters of Cracow they had formerly been unfamiliar with.

Autorka dla zilustrowania znaczeń przypisywanych barwie w krakowskim malarstwie materii wybrała konkretny moment rozwoju tego nurtu – rok 1960. Hasło „Kolor śladu / ślad koloru” rozumie jako dwie praktyki wykorzystania barwy: kolor śladu to barwa tworzywa użytego do budowania obrazu-przedmiotu, ślad koloru to polichromia nadana kompozycji wbrew autentycznym barwom użytych tworzyw lub drobne znakowania w obrębie pola obrazowego, szczątki kapistowskiego myślenia o obrazie, naniesione jako akcenty wzmacniające ekspresję kompozycji lub nośniki pozamalarskiej symboliki. Analizę wybranych przykładów malarstwa materii uzupełniono refleksjami krytyków, reagujących spontanicznie na falę nieznanej im dotąd twórczości krakowskich malarzy.
