The aim of the paper is to present the activity of the Division of the Sections for the History of Pharmacy of the Polish Pharmaceutical Society (PTFarm), established in 1964 as a successor to the Section for the History of Pharmacy, founded as an agency of the Polish Pharmaceutical Society in 1956. An overview and library search has been made of writings on the topic, mainly in 'Farmacja Polska' (Polish Pharmacy) and other journals, as well as in the series 'PAMIETNIKI' (Memoirs), published since 1999. The issues discussed in the paper have been presented at Scientific Conferences, Congresses and Symposia organized by the Section for the History of Pharmacy of the Polish Pharmaceutical Society, both in Poland and abroad. The Division of the Sections for the History of Pharmacy of the Polish Pharmaceutical Society has constituted a meeting place for historians of pharmacy from Poland and abroad. It has influenced directions of research in the particular sections and has represented the interests of historians within the Main Board of the Polish Pharmaceutical Society. The members of the Division have been active in many areas and have promoted research in the history of the profession and its ethics, as well as advocated the gathering of mementos of the activities of pharmacists.

The paper gives a professional profile of Prof. Jerzy Tulecki, and especially the last forty of his over ninety-years- long life, basing on the author's own reminiscences, as well as on data contained in the biographical writings. Over that period, i.e. since the 1960's, he was actively involved in teaching activities at the Pharmaceutical Faculty of the Medical School in Poznan, where he was, among other things, deputy dean of the faculty with responsibilities for student affairs, and where he excelled in his capacity as supervisor of many M.Sc. theses and Ph.D. dissertations in the field of pharmaceutics. He also had a major standing as a researcher, being the author of numerous scientific publications and patents, as well as cooperating with the pharmaceutical industry. At the same time, Jerzy Tulecki, a person of great energy, was an activist of the Polish Pharmaceutical Society, holding the posts of the Head of the Poznań Branch of the Society, as well as a member of its national board. He was responsible for many initiatives relating to the statutory activities of the Society, and was engaged in many forms of organizing the research and professional life of Polish pharmacists in the second half of the 20th century.

Mentions of lettuce (Lactuca sp.) that have appeared since antiquity contained similar information on its curative properties, but such properties were ascribed to different species or varieties. Apart from the wild and poisonous lettuce, also garden or common lettuce were identified as having curative action, and some publications lacked information enabling the precise identification of the lettuce in question. In the 19th century, attempts were made to put some order into the knowledge of lettuce as a medicinal plant. Information on lettuce, contained in Polish medical studies of the 19th century, points to the poisonous species 'Lactuca virosa' and the common or garden lettuce 'Lactuca sativa v. Lactuca hortensis', as being used as a medicinal plant. In that period, lettuce and especially the desiccated lactescent juice obtained from it, ' lactucarium', were considered to be an intoxicant, and were used as a sedative and an analgesic. The action of the substance was weaker than that of opium but free of the side-effects, and medical practice showed that in some cases 'lactucarium' produced better curative effects than opium. To corroborate those properties of lettuce and its lactescent juice, studies were undertaken to find the substance responsible for the curative effects of the juice. However, such studies failed to produce the expected results, and the component responsible for the curative properties of letuce was not identified. Medical practice thus had to restrict itself to the uses of the desiccated lactescent juice and extracts obtained from it. The possibility of obtaining 'lactucarium' from plants cultivated in Poland caused Polish pharmacists and physicians to take an interest in the stuff and launch their own research of lettuce and the lactescent juice obtained from it. Results of research on lettuce were published in 19th-century journals by, among others, Jan Fryderyk Wolfgang, Florian Sawiczewski and Józef Orkisz.
