The cultural and literary developments of the first half of the 20th century remain an important object of study, especially when it comes to tracing patterns of change that have shaped Europe's present cultural makeup. This article is part of an ongoing study of intercultural change in Western Europe in the early twentieth century, extended to cover corresponding developments in Poland and Lithuania. This article takes as a case in point the life and work of Józef Albin Horbaczewski, a bilingual writer, who lived in Kaunas in 1923-1933.
