South East Asia was one of the first destinations of Chinese emigration over the centuries - first immigrants reached its territory over two thousands years ago. Over the years Huaren were gradually expanding into major settlements, playing an important role both in the history and economy of the region. Singapore, a small island turned into one of the Asian Tigers, is nowadays the only country in the region, where the citizens of the Chinese descent constitute the majority of the society. But also it is a vivid example of a country, in which the authorities managed to create a new national identity. The goal of this paper is - on the one hand to present the historical background of ethnic relations in Singapore and - on the other hand to analyze the process of creating the new national identity.
