The sixth-century historian Procopius of Caesarea described the church of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople in his treatise „Περὶ κτισμάτων” (“On Buildings”). The text about Hagia Sophia is the only surviving historical source for the original Justinianic edifice before the collapse of its first dome in 558. This detailed and elaborate description of the church is an example of ekphrasis. Ekphrasis is a rhetorical technique which makes the described object visible. In this paper I will attempt to analyse how far Procopius' description is a rhetorical exercise, and how far it is a trustworthy historical source.

This article presents a chronological evolution of the place of the proclamation of the Word of God. On the basis of pericopes from the Old Testament, the places that God chose to speak with the man and then places chosen by Jesus Christ and the Church in its early centuries were indicated. Use of the term “ambo” (ἄμβων), which appeared in the Church probably at the end of the fourth century, became widespread, and over time it was adopted as the name of the place for the Liturgy of the Word and for the book.

Niniejszy artykuł w sposób chronologiczny przedstawia ewolucję miejsca proklamacji słowa Bożego. Na podstawie perykop ze Starego Testamentu zostały wskazane miejsca, które sam Bóg wybrał na rozmowę z człowiekiem, a następnie miejsca, które wybrał Jezus Chrystus i Kościół w swoich pierwszych wiekach. Termin „ambona” (ἄμβων), który pojawił się w Kościele prawdopodobnie od koniec IV wieku, upowszechnił się i z biegiem czasu przyjął jako nazwa miejsca sprawowania liturgii słowa i przechowywania księgi.
