The Prophet Jonah enjoys special esteem among both Christians and Muslims in the Middle East. Over the centuries more than 20 places were established as being associated with his worship. Many of them still function to this day. This article is devoted to the three mosques erected in places that various traditions indicated as the Prophet’s burial site. The oldest known sanctuary of Jonah was built in Gath-Hepher, the hometown of the Prophet, now identified with a Palestinian village Meshhed. St. Jerome already mentioned it in the fourth century, probably referring to the local Jewish tradition. Unfortunately, no one today can confirm Jonah’s place of worship in Meshhed. The author tries to discover the reasons for this while describing the history of Jonah’s two other sanctuaries. The first of these is Halhul near Hebron, mentioned for the first time in 1173, that is, during the Crusades to the Holy Land, then rebuilt as a mosque that still functions, recently with great trouble, to this day. The second sanctuary, until recently, was in Mosul, on one of the hills that now covers the ruins of ancient Nineveh. One may learn about Jonah’s worship at this place from documents dated to the 6th / 7th century when there was a church dedicated to the prophet, conver-ted in later centuries to a mosque and finally blown up by ISIS fighters in 2014. All three places of worship show the complicated historical weave of the followers of the three monotheistic religions in this region, not only in the distant past but today too.
