Götz Aly’s highly controversial book Why the Germans? Why the Jews? discerns envy as the root cause of anti-Semitism in Germany before and after World War I: according to Aly, gentile Germans loathed their Jewish neighbours for being better educated, more industrious and, therefore, better-off. This essay presents a criticalassessment of both the book and its predominantly negative reviews in the light of the work of the US economist Thomas Sowell and the Austrian sociologist Helmut Schoeck.

W swojej książce pt. Warum die Deutschen? Warum die Juden? (Dlaczego Niemcy? Dlaczego Żydzi?) Götz Aly określa jako jedną z przyczyn holocaustu zawiść Niemców wobec Żydów, którzy byli z reguły lepiej wykształceni i bardziej pracowici. Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia reakcje na rozprawę Aly’ego w niemieckojęzycznej prasie, krytycznie ocenia argumentację książki i jej recenzentów – m.in. w świetle badań austriackiego socjologa Helmuta Schoecka oraz amerykańskiego ekonomisty Thomasa Sowella.

Der gegenwärtige Aufsatz untersucht, welches Echo Alys Abhandlung in ausgewählten Blättern der deutschsprachigen Presse findet. Sowohl die Rezensionen, als auch Alys Argumentation selbst werden kritisch beleuchtet – unter anderem vor dem Hintergrund der Forschungen des Soziologen Helmut Schoeck und des US-Nationalökonomen Thomas Sowell.
