The Geography of Self-Representation: Orientalism in Ernest Hemingway’S the Sun also Rises

This paper will deal with the problematics of cultural self-representation in Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises. I shall approach this theme by applying concepts from Edward Said’s Orientalism and Jean Baudrillard’s America to Hemingway’s novel and discussing the limitations of such theories which - it will be argued - oversimplify the issue by reducing it to an opposition between ‘Self’ and ‘Otherness’.

The Hemingway that Poles know is Bronisław Zieliński's Hemingway. Once one of the most popular writers in Poland, today he is already forgotten. Using the example of one of Hemingway's most personal books, "Green Hills of Africa," the author examines whether the Polish reader has come to know the kind of Hemingway that the Nobel Prize winner really created. The translator knew the writer personally and fell into the trap of the "Hemingway myth" - he joined in the construction of the Nobel Prize winner's legend, trying to eliminate the affections of shame that can be found in the novel.

Der Hemingway, den die Polen kennen, ist der Hemingway von Bronisław Zieliński. Einst einer der populärsten Schriftsteller Polens, ist er heute vergessen. Am Beispiel eines der persönlichsten Bücher Hemingways, "Grüne Hügel Afrikas," prüft der Autor, ob der polnische Leser den Hemingway kennengelernt hat, den der Nobelpreisträger wirklich geschaffen hat. Der Übersetzer kannte den Schriftsteller persönlich und tappte in die Falle des "Mythos Hemingway" - Er hat an der Konstruktion der Legende des Nobelpreisträgers mitgewirkt und versucht, die in dem Roman zu findende Affektiertheit der Scham zu kompensieren.

Hemingway, jakiego znają Polacy, to Hemingway Bronisława Zielińskiego. Kiedyś jeden z najpopularniejszych pisarzy w Polsce, dziś już zapomniany. Na przykładzie jednej z najbardziej osobistych książek Hemingwaya, „Zielonych wzgórz Afryki”, autor sprawdza, czy polski czytelnik poznał takiego Hemingwaya, jakiego naprawdę stworzył noblista. Tłumacz znał pisarza osobiście i wpadł w pułapkę "hemingwayowskiego mitu" - włączył się w budowanie legendy noblisty, próbując zniwelować afekt wstydu, który można odnaleźć w powieści.
