Literary comparisons of Tadeusz Różewicz and Zbigniew Herbert mainly stress differences between them. The aim of my paper is to change the usual approach and argue that they both “interweave in Norwid”, to put it metaphorically. I claim that the latter could be viewed as a link that binds the two different, even conflicted one might say, poetical approaches. Norwid treated as the principium comparationis helps to recognize subtle similarities and sometimes, paradoxically, differences they entail. Apart from “Norwid-focused reading”, I additionally recapitulate poetic readings of Norwid’s Czułość (Tenderness).

The article aims to offer an analysis of Zbigniew Herbert’s eschatological poems. The author divides them up into two distinct groups: the first cluster of poems consists of eschatological poems in the narrow sense of the term. These poems grapple with the mystery of death and life beyond the grave; they also conjure up poetic visions of the hereafter. The other group comprises poems that merely employ eschatological categories and images to engage with earthly problems.

Artykuł jest próbą analizy wierszy Zbigniewa Herberta o tematyce eschatologicznej. Autor proponuje podział tych utworów na wiersze eschatologiczne we właściwym znaczeniu tego słowa, czyli takie, które zmagają się z tajemnicą śmierci i życia pozagrobowego oraz proponują poetyckie wizje zaświatów, i wiersze określone jako quasi-eschatologiczne, to znaczy utwory wykorzystujące eschatologiczne obrazowanie do omawiania problemów doczesnych.

This article discusses Czesław Miłosz as a poet-translator of the poetry of his younger colleagues: Herbert, Różewicz and Szymborska. The comparative analysis focuses on such features largely neglected in translation studies as Polish-English linguistic asymmetries and the poetics of grammar, that is, the functions of definite, indefinite and zero articles, verbs and their aspects, personal pronouns as well as the auxiliary verb jest/is. Whereas some of these items cannot be translated adequately, because they cause an aesthetic loss in any translation, others allow for adequate, sometimes even “optimal,” translation.

The article is an attempt at a synthetic review and interpretation of the angelic motives present in Zbigniew Herbert’s poetry. The angelic creations of the author of “Mr Cogito” are presented in a broader cultural perspective. First of all, the context of the literary tradition was referred to especially of the Romantic and contemporary literature. An important reference point is also art, philosophy and theology. The presentations of angels are very strongly embedded in the basic aesthetic and moral paradigms exposed by the poet. The author of “Rovigo” has attained in his works a peculiar reinterpretation of the ways of handling of angelic images ad their functions by placing the subtle creatures in a resolute manner in the dehumanized realm, marked with the tragic note. The author of the article attempted to show how the angelic motives determine Herbert’s poetic imagination.

Kreacje anielskie autora Pana Cogito ukazane zostały w szerszej perspektywie kulturalnej. Przede wszystkim przywołano tu kontekst tradycji literackiej, a zwłaszcza literaturę epoki romantyzmu oraz współczesną. Ważnym układem odniesienia jest także rzeczywistość sztuki, filozofia czy teologia. Te przedstawienia aniołów bardzo mocno wpisują się w podstawowe paradygmaty estetyczne i moralne eksponowane przez poetę. Autor Rovigo dokonał w swym dziele swoistej reinterpretacji ustalonych przez tradycję kulturową sposobów odczytywania obrazów i funkcji postaci anielskich poprzez zdecydowane wpisanie bytów subtelnych w obszar zdehumanizowany i naznaczony pierwiastkiem tragizmu. Autor artykułu starał się pokazać, jak motywy angelologiczne determinują poetycką wyobraźnię Herberta.
