Artykuł jest próbą analizy duchowej sytuacji ludu kontynentu południowoamerykańskiego – Indian Mapuche. Kultura tego plemienia rozwijała się dynamicznie w okresie prekolumbijskim. Wówczas cechowały ją: szacunek wobec religii, troska o rodzinę oraz pokojowe relacje międzyludzkie. Spotkanie społeczności Mapuche z kulturą chrześcijańską, mimo trudności w początkowym okresie, wydawało dobre owoce. Osiągnięcia te zostały zaniedbane w niespokojnym okresie posoborowym – zarówno w refleksji teologicznej, jak i działalności duszpasterskiej na kontynencie Ameryki Południowej w drugiej połowie XX w. Istotny wkład w ewangelizację Indian Mapuche stanowi przesłanie, jakie pozostawił Jan Paweł II, odwiedzając Araukanię w 1987 roku.

The article is an attempt to analyse the spiritual situation of the people of the South American continent – the Mapuche Indians. The culture of this tribe developed dynamically in the pre-Columbian period. At that time, it was characterized by: respect for religion, care for the family and peaceful interpersonal relations. The meeting of the Mapuche community with the Christian culture, despite the difficulties in the initial period, bore good fruit. These achievements were neglected in the turbulent post-conciliar period - both in theological reflection and pastoral activity on the South American continent in the second half of the 20th century. An important contribution to the evangelization of the Mapuche Indians is the message that John Paul II left when visiting Araucania in 1987.
