Saint Gertrude the Great (1256-1302) was a Saxon Christian saint. She died in the monastery of Helfta. As a young girl, she joined the Benedictine monastery at Helfta, under the direction of its abbess, Gertrude of Hackeborn. She is sometimes confused with her abbess, which is why she is often incorrectly depicted in art holding a crosier. She later experienced a conversion to God and began to strive for perfection in her religious life, turning her scholarly talents to scripture and theology. Many of the writings of St. Gertrude have unfortunately perished. Those now extant are: The Legatus Divinae Pietatis, the Exercises of St. Gertrude and the Liber Specialis Gratiae of St. Mechtilde. The Exercises, which are seven in number, embrace the work of the reception of baptismal grace to the preparation for death. Her glowing language deeply impregnated with the liturgy and scriptures exalts the soul imperceptibly to the heights of contemplation. St. Gertrude the Great hada very special devotion for the Sacred Heart. St. Gertrude taught that Jesus has given us the gift of His Sacred Heart so that, when suffering, we can seek our refuge and our consolation there. The characteristic trait of St. Gertrude's piety is her devotion to the Sacred Heart, the symbol of that immense charity which urged the Word to take flesh, to institute the Holy Eucharist, to take on Himself our sins, and, dying on the Cross, to offer Himself as a victim and a sacrifice to the Eternal Father.

The Holy Eucharist is placed in the center of conciliar life of the Orthodox Church. Conciliarity is expressed in the celebration of the Divine Liturgy and the Divine Liturgy is the guarantee of the correct conciliarity. The basis for the Holy Eucharist and for the Conciliar Church is always the unity, following the example of the unity of the Holy Trinity. The manifestation of the Eucharistic measurement of the conciliarity of the Church is its Christological and ecclesiological and then also pneumatological character. Eucharistic and soteriological perspective of the Orthodox Church is recognized only through the worship and Divine Liturgy.

The spirituality of St. Arnold Janssen and his first congregation of the Society of the Divine Word (abbr. SVD) can be defined as perfectly Trinitarian-missionary. Arnold identified the essence of the missionary nature of the Church, precisely in the dual mission of the Divine Word and the Holy Spirit. Trinitarian spirituality is therefore the source of Christocentric and Pneumatological spirituality. In fact, they are mutually related. In case of Arnold Janssen, devotions to the Sacred Heart and the Holy Eucharist spring directly from his Christocentric devotion based on the Divine Word. This article aims to present the multidimensional beauty of Arnold Janssen’s Christocentric spirituality in his life passed on to the SVDs. It is presented in three chapters in which three fundamental parts of this spirituality are presented: the Divine Word, the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Eucharist; with a certain connection to the early and present Constitutions with some challenges for today’s spirituality of the SVD.

Założyciel znakomicie utożsamił istotę misyjnej natury Kościoła właśnie w podwójnej misji Słowa Bożego i Ducha Świętego.
