W artykule scharakteryzowano twórczość Hugo Loetschera pod kątem jej nadzwyczajnej uniwersalności. Wiele bowiem utworów szwajcarskiego pisarza z biegiem lat nie tylko nic nie straciło na aktualności, lecz można je wręcz odnosić do coraz to innych sytuacji, które w sposób niezwykle trafny puentują. W tym kontekście wskazano zarówno na debiutancką powieść Loetschera z 1963 roku „Abwässer – Ein Gutachten”, jak i na słynną „Powieść o koniunkturze – Noe” (1967), którą przetłumaczono na wiele języków i która wciąż na nowo interpretowana jest w odniesieniu do sytuacji gospodarczej i politycznej różnych krajów. Obraz twórczości Loetschera dopełnia analiza jego najsłynniejszych powieści „Der Immune” (1975) i „Die Papiere des Immunen” (1986) oraz „Die Augen des Mandarin” (1999), które poprzez swą tematykę i strukturę są odzwierciedleniem współczesnego świata w dobie globalizacji.

The paper offers a characterization of the literary output by Hugo Loetscher with an emphasis on its universality. Many of the works by the Swiss writer have not lost their relevance in the course of time but can even be said to aptly comment on modern topical issues. As examples for this one can name the debut novel “Abwässer – Ein Gutachten” (1963) or the famous “Noah. Roman einer Konjunktur” (1967), which was translated into many languages and which is interpreted time and again in relation to economic and political situations in various countries. The description of Loetscher’s output is completed with an analysis of his most famous works “Der Immune” (1975), “Die Papiere des Immunen” (1986) and “Die Augen des Mandarin” (1999), which – owing to their subject matter and structure – are reflections of the modern world of the globalization era.

Tytułowa ‚ekspertyza’ w powieści Hugo Loetschera „Abwässer: Ein Gutachten” (Ścieki: Ekspertyza) przedstawia nie tylko opis miejsca pracy konserwatora sieci wodno-kanalizacyjnej. Poprzez zestawienie obowiązków i warunków pracy przebijają się prywatne przeżycia głównego bohatera, które świadczą o wyjątkowości tego stanowiska, rzutującego na jego życie osobiste. Postać owego konserwatora jako łącznika pomiędzy naszym światem a światem podziemnym jest pretekstem do głębszej analizy naszego stosunku do wybranych aspektów ochrony środowiska, zagadnień związanych z osobami wyrzuconymi poza margines społeczeństwa, ale przede wszystkim naszego stosunku do tego, czego nie akceptujemy, co przemilczamy, co wypieramy z naszej świadomości. W artykule podjęto próbę opisania niektórych aspektów owej głębszej warstwy znaczeniowej debiutanckiej powieści szwajcarskiego pisarza.

The eponymous ‘expert assessment’ in the novel by Hugo Loetscher “Abwässer: Ein Gutachten” (Sewage: An Expert Assessment) is not a mere description of the workplace of a sewage plant maintenance person. The presentation of his duties and working conditions also reveals private experiences of the protagonist, which show the uniqueness of the post influencing his private life. The figure of the maintenance person as a liaison between our world and the underground world serves as a pretext for a deeper analysis of our attitude towards certain aspects of environment protection, the issues connected with those rejected by the society and above all our attitude towards all that we do not accept, that we leave unsaid, that we repel from our consciousness. The paper is an attempt to describe some of the aspects of the deeper meaning structure of the debut novel of the Swiss writer.
