The theme and the priorities of the IJREL reflect the conceptual principles underlying the modernization of education and the reform of the educational systems in European countries, as well as national development strategies for the 21st century. One of the European Union’s key educational o bjectives is the provision of equal opportunities for all with regard to access to learning and knowledge, regardless of gender, financial and physical ability, and place of residence. That is why distance learning has now been granted a status of high priority. If introduced on a wide scale, distance learning and teaching may make significant contribution towards the achievement of educational goals in member states.

Celem artykułu było sprawdzenie prawdziwości hipotezy o zróżnicowaniu wykorzystania komputerów do posługiwania się Internetem w celach komunikacyjnych, zakupowych, rozrywkowych i informacyjnych. Analizowano różnice dotyczące osób należących do dwóch grup wiekowych: rozpoczynających i kończących karierę zawodową w latach 2003 i 2011. Ponadto w badaniu uwzględniono dodatkowe cechy społeczno-demograficzne: płeć, wykształcenie oraz miejsce zamieszkania. Dane zaczerpnięto z Diagnozy społecznej. Analizę przeprowadzono, korzystając z regresji logistycznej oraz analizy korespondencji. W wyniku przeprowadzonych badań potwierdzono zróżnicowanie w zakresie eksploatacji zasobów Internetu przez osoby starsze i młode, z uwzględnieniem pozostałych zmiennych.

The objective of this paper was to test a hypothesis on the diversity in the use of computers for online communication, shopping activities, entertainment and information acquisition. The differences between people belonging to two age groups – those who started and ended their professional careers either in 2003 or 2011 – were analysed. The study included the additional socio-demographic characteristics: gender, level of education and place of residence. The data were retrieved from the “Social Diagnosis”, and logistic regression and correspondence analysis were used. The research findings confirm the differences in Internet use by the groups of younger and older people, taking into account other variables.
