Starting from a positive evaluation of Vatican II and taking into account the long period over which the Council has been received, the present study examines certain conciliar documents that have had the greatest influence on the renewal of Catholic theology, in particular its methodology. First, the article underlines how the Council has evolved as a “laboratory” of renewed theology. It consequently examines the key text of the Council’s renewal programme: point 16 from the decree Optatam totius. Finally, it highlights the renewal impulses present in numbers 11 and 17 of the Unitatis redintegratio decree. The analyses of the idea of hierarchia veritatum (UR 11) are aimed at demonstrating how the Council’s most decisive contribution to the renewal of theology consisted of proposing a hermeneutics that was rethought in the light of the Trinitarian Revelation of God Love.

The Catholic Church in Germany has experienced a crisis after the Second Vatican Council. The crisis affected especially the priests, who in a great number left their ministry. Even though the Protestant churches in Germany But lost their believers even more dramatically, one might see the influence of Protestantism in Germany on the Catholic Church. The author of the article shows the negative consequences of the adjustment of the Church to the “spirit of the time”. There are among them: an insufficient religious education; not adequate preparation for the Holy Communion; the emphasis on the social event in the Holy Mass at the cost of its sacred and transcendent dimension. The Sunday obligation is also analyzed. The article presents a point of view of a historian of the church and not of the pastoral theologian. This explains the methodological key used in the article.

The article discusses Pope Benedict XVI’s / Joseph Ratzinger’s understanding of revelation. It shows the bases for his understanding to be found in the theology of St. Bonaventure, more specifically in the Doctor Seraphicus’ Hexaëmeron. It is on the theology of history in Bonaventure that Ratzinger had written his terminal paper. This will allow him to impact Vatican II in an original way. The essay describes how the young peritus Joseph Ratzinger contributed in a most decisive way to the dogmatic constitution on divine revelation Dei Verbum’s recalibration of the nature of revelation. It also discusses hope Pope Benedict‘s teaching office thematized revelation. Revelation is ultimately neither Scripture nor tradition, but the self-disclosure of the Triune God in the Thou of Jesus Christ.
