Article provides a general framework of Manuel Castells' theory of the Network Society which is successively presented in his three-book series entitled: 'The Information Age: Economy, Society and Culture'. The concept of the Network Society refers to general social change which reflects on technological transformation connected with rapid diffusion of ICTs, a process popularly conceived as 'informational revolution'. This explains why we start with the notion of 'informational society' and 'knowledge-based society' terms introduced by such economists like Machlup and Porat, and subsequently popularised by Bell, Ginzberg, Naisbitt, Drucker, Toffler and Masuda. Nowadays we have observed an immense stream of research that is concentrated on social, economic, political and cultural consequences of rapid digitalisation (e.g. Social Informatics). In the field of the Informational Age and its cultural consequences, Manuel Castells stand for the most important theoretician.

Today, information and communication technologies play a special role in the economy. Information is so important to its operation that scientists have called it the fourth factor of production, and the ICT industry has been hailed as an accelerator of economic development and technological progress. Moreover, this sector significantly increases international economic competitiveness and productivity. Information-communication solutions enable businesses to operate in a new dimension – the virtual one, while also facilitating expansion into new markets and the creation of new jobs. There is no doubt ICT is increasingly determining the level of advancement of some countries.

ICTs are developing in China and India particularly quickly. Both countries have taken opportunities provided by globalization, huge human capability, long lasting tradition and culture, efficient reforms and decisions at country level, and rely on ICTs and use it much more than other countries, launch and promote technological solutions, including services, expanding the role of the third sector in the economy of these countries. It is quite important, to note that in developed countries share of services in the economy is high and increases relatively slowly (if at all), whereas in developing countries this is still a dynamical process. This is visible especially in China and India, where the transformation is omitting industry (people substitute their agriculture-related occupations directly with service-related jobs). Many challenges and questions concerning ICTs in China and India remain unanswered and wait to be investigated by economy researchers. Does current understanding of economic notions apply to the reality of the 'new economy'? What factors stand behind this unprecedented ICTs sector and ICTs use development in the mentioned two countries? What is the role of ICTs in servicisation of the both economies? And what influence does it have on their economic development?

The importance of up-to-date information-communication technologies in the economic and social life has been growing in the recent years. Internet creates new opportunities for providing services and meeting needs. The newest results of research surveys of the quantitative and qualitative nature on the use of e-services by consumers in such countries as Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine are presented in the article. The results of surveys may serve as a source of information on consumers’ behaviour to form their marketing strategies. The researches were carried out for the purposes of the project carried out by the Institute for Market, Consumption and Business Cycles Research in Warsaw (Poland). The grant-funded project is carried out by an international team.
