The article is a review of Polish and foreign publications devoted to the transformation of medical libraries into information-search systems based on new technologies of data processing and communication in computer networks. The article examines specialist publications that describe the organisation and information work of medical libraries. The publications clearly demonstrate an awareness of how significant it is that the libraries cooperate in order to improve the information service provided to the users. The authors also stress the necessity of promoting information services and providing training both for medical librarians and for information users. The knowledge of new applications of communication technologies in libraries has a direct influence on the effectiveness of the information flow, not only in medical libraries, but also in various environments associated with biomedicine and related sciences. The authoress points out that developments in information sciences should be much more widely used in medical libraries and stress the necessity of a broader introduction of research methods used in other disciplines (medicine, cognitive psychology and cognitive sciences) to medical libraries.
