Managing portfolio on the customers' order is a service which involves investing a customers' means on their behalf and on their account in selected instruments of the financial market. The assets in question may include cash, securities and other financial instruments. The first step in the process is constructing assumptions of the investment strategy by the investor. The assumptions specify kinds of risks the investor is prepared to take and investment targets and aims. The second step in the process of the portfolio management is updating current and future conditions (financial, economic, political) by the investor. The third step is creating the portfolio itself. Considering the assumptions of investment strategy and financial market forecasts the investor specifies what securities to choose, how to carry out their allocation and on what markets. The management process aims at constructing the portfolio which would generate the highest possible rate of return at a minimum risk. The fourth step in the process is constant monitoring of the investor's needs and conditions of financial market. The element of the monitoring process is evaluation of the portfolio's profitability and comparison of results with the expectations included in the investment strategy assumptions. Professional management of the portfolio provides the investor wilh benefits resulting from specialization and knowledge of the managing firm and enables him to take advantage of dynamic development of the financial market.

The author strives in the article to characterise socially responsible investments (SRI), which are carefully analysed in western literature, but in Poland have not yet garnered a great deal of interest. A detailed outline of the concept of socially responsible investment is provided along with a discussion of related concepts, then the most important investing strategies used for portfolio selection based on SRI are described. The evolution of socially responsible investing and changes that have occurred across centuries are next presented. The paper focuses particularly on the dynamic development of the SRI market in the US and Western Europe over the last twenty years. Further on, the Polish SRI market is examined, including its present state and future prospects.

The paper investigates the theoretical foundations of production potential development, and discuss the basic components, that form the production potential of machine building enterprises. The production potential of a firm is seen as a productive position, which takes into account all economic relations and participation of available resources in the production process for the achievement of potentially possible output. The paper analyses the external environment as a factor of the indirect impact on the activity and the development of production potential of the engineering complex of Ukraine. It is performed the analysis of the macro-surrounding environment of the industrial enterprises on the basis of PEST-analysis. The last considered political, economic, social and technological factors. The article provides a recommendation about the impact of the unstable macro-surroundings on the activities of engineering companies. It is proposed practical measures that could potentially increase the production potential of the machine-building enterprises of national economy. Among the factors that have a significant impact on the productive capacity of engineering enterprises were underlined: unstable external and internal markets, lack of investment resources, worsening of tightness of cooperation between enterprises of related industries within the national economy.
