This article examines the history of relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the European Union from 1992 to 2005, focusing on the developments of the last four years, in an attempt to analyse them. It describes the assumptions of the Iranian foreign policy and outlines the impact of both the United States and Russia as well as the situation in the Middle East on the relations between the two parties. It also discusses the successes, failures and current objectives of the EU policy towards Iran, potential scenarios of future events and positions of both parties of the dialogue. Negotiations between the European Union and Iran have been formally defined as a dialogue and both parties have made attempts to conduct them in an atmosphere of mutual understanding and respect. Therefore, the article shows the importance of this form of relations as an alternative to threats and use of force in relationships between states and nations, and an alternative to the clash of civilisations.
