W artykule analizowane jest zjawisko elastyczności syntaktycznej idiomów w języku niemieckim ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem ich modyfikacji przez przymiotniki, zdania względne, w-przesunięcia oraz stronę bierną. Pokazuje on, ze zarówno idiomy poddające się dekomponowaniu, jak i idiomy stałe wykazują zmienność strukturalną pod wpływem wymienionych czynników.

This paper discusses the syntactic flexibility of German idioms, with a particular focus on adjectival modification, relative clause formation, wh-movement, and passivization. It shows that both decomposable and non-decomposable idioms can be modified structurally be these processes.

Der Aufsatz diskutiert die syntaktische Flexibilität von deutschen Idiomen mit besonderem Fokus auf Modifikation durch Adjektive, Relativsätze, W-Bewegung Passivierung. Es wird gezeigt, dass sowohl dekomponierbare als auch nicht-dekomponierbare Idiome durch die genannten Prozesse strukturell verändert werden können.

Slovak students’ comprehension of English figurative idioms containing body parts

Figurative idioms constitute a large proportion of multi-word expressions in everyday language. Contrary to the traditional view of idioms as non-compositional units, numerous studies in cognitive linguistics show that most idioms are not arbitrary but motivated by conceptual metaphors and metonymies that provide a link between literal and figurative meanings. Familiarity with particular source domains and conceptual mappings is regarded as a source of idiom transparency. In this article, we report on a study in which 85 Slovak students participated. Their task was to guess the meanings of English idioms containing three body parts: the eye, the hand and the heart. These body parts are not equally productive metaphorical source domains in English and Slovak. The research results which we present indicate that different prominence of the source domains in students’ mother tongue and the target language is one of the factors that influence idiom comprehension in a foreign language.

The article Between phraseography and language use. The idiom ‘ein heißes Pflaster’ in dictionary and in corpus concerns the problems of a comparison between descriptions and definitions of a German idiom ein heißes Pflaster in the monolingual and bilingual dictionaries with a corpus-based meaning analysis. In the centre of the study remain the problems of the context-inducted polysemy in monolingual dicitionaries and the problem of the imagery in the bilingual German-Polish phraseography.

In the context of this article, the crude and vulgar idioms mentioned in Duden-11 “Redewendungen” will be examined in terms of their motivation, meaning, frequency, style marking and their usage. First, they will be extracted from this dictionary and examined according to their origins. Next, they will be categorized concerning their subjects. Furthermore, the style tags used in the dictionary will be tested. This will be done by contrasting them to reference corpora before carrying out a survey among native speakers. Finally, a list of common, relatively frequent idioms will be created, which can then be used primarily in foreign language didactics.
