The choice of a work career is one of the most important events in a person’s life course and typically involves secondary socialization and identification with role models. This paper is concerned with the crucial role of my PhD dissertation supervisor at McMaster University, Dr. Billy Shaffir, in my choice of an academic career. I highlight and celebrate how, through the guidance of Dr. Shaffir, I experienced “immersive socialization” into field research and happily converted from an intended business career to an academic career.

Individuals who partake in video games are often regarded with prejudice. It is an activity that is perceived to be mainly related to senseless leisure and teenage entertainment. However, many diverse people make video games such an important part of their lives that they become passionately engaged in it. Video games and online video gaming offer the player immersive experiences unlike any other forms of media. A phenomenological and interpretive exploration is undertaken in order to gain a deeper understanding of the narratives of online gamers and their experiences of a sense of belonging to the associated online communities. Through the use of in-depth interviews, the article explores various aspects of the life stories of a group of eight South African university students. It attempts to show how online gaming has become a part of their lifeworlds. The aim of this article is to present the narratives of online gamers as rich and descriptive accounts that maintain the voices of the participants. Various aspects of the lifeworlds of online gamers are explored. Firstly, an exploration is undertaken to gain an understanding of what it means to be a gamer. It focuses on how a person can become involved with gaming and how it can evolve into something that a person is engaged with on a daily basis. Secondly, it explores how video games influence the perception of reality of gamers. Immersion in video games can transfer a player into an alternative reality and can take the focus away from the real world. This can lead to feelings of joy and excitement, but can also lead to escapism. Lastly, the article shifts attention towards how online video gamers experience online communities. Players can have positive experiences with random strangers online, but because of the anonymous nature of the online environment, it can also lead to negative and isolating experiences.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest refleksja nad zjawiskiem immersji i próba odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy immersja (Ryan) - zjawisko zaangażowania się czytelnika w narrację mające decydujący wpływ na popularność danej książki - może zostać osiągnięta za pomocą środków językowych, prowadzących do redukcji estetycznej charakterystycznej szczególnie dla współczesnych debiutujących prozaików polskich i niemieckich. Językowa redukcja estetyki umożliwia osiągnięcie wolności imaginacyjnej, która pozwala czytelnikowi na rozwinięcie dowolnego wyobrażenia o postaciach danego dzieła literackiego lub o opisanych w nim scenach, a w konsekwencji prowadzi do szybkiego tempa czytania i do immersji. Z drugiej strony estetycznie bogato „zdobione" teksty kanoniczne wymuszają u czytelników dokładnej symulację przedstawionych scen. Aktualne badania empiryczne dowodzą, że nowy sposób narracji prowadzi do wzmożonej pracy mózgu, co spowalnia proces imaginacji czytanego tekstu i w efekcie (u mniej doświadczonych czytelników) do utraty radości z lektury.

The paper investigates the occurrences and characteristics of the language used in contem-porary German literature and how these enact influence on immersion (Ryan). Through a discussion of the empirical approach to the process of reading, the article distinguishes between the aesthetic reduction of today and the long descriptive characteristics found mostly in older works of literature. For the majority of the newest works of contemporary literature, the analysis finds there is a positive influence towards both the cognition of the text and the immersion of the reader with the piece of literature.

Zusammenfassung: Eine erfolgreiche Immersion (Ryan), die Verschmelzung des Lesers/der Leserin mit dem Text und gleichzeitig die wohl wichtigste Bedingung dafür, ob ein literarisches Werk den Leser/die Leserin anspricht, lässt sich - so die These des Beitrags - mit sprachlichen Mitteln erzeugen. So lässt sich vor allem unter den Prosadebütant/innen der Gegenwartsliteratur auf der sprachlichen Ebene eine Tendenz zur ästhetischen Reduktion beobachten. Diese dadurch erzeugte Liberalität der Vorstellungskraft erlaubt es dem Leser/der Leserin, die Figuren oder bestimmte Gegenstände frei zu imaginieren, was wiederum zu einem schnellen Lesetempo und einer Immersion führt. Dagegen zwingen oft die attributreichen Werke der älteren Literatur den Leser dazu, eine von dem Autor/der Autorin beschriebene Textwelt in der Vorstellung detailgetreu nachzubauen, was der empirischen Forschung zufolge die kognitiven Fähigkeiten beansprucht, den Fortgang der Handlung verzögert und in Konsequenz (bei nicht geübten Lesern) die Lust am Lesen rauben kann.
