Amerykański Instytut Smithsona jest największą na świecie siecią muzeów i ośrodków badawczych. W artykule opisano działalność Bibliotek Instytutu Smithsona, które z kolei tworzą największy światowy system bibliotek muzealnych. Przedstawiono historię Bibliotek oraz takie zagadnienia, jak: finanse, digitalizacja kolekcji, katalogowanie zbiorów, programy edukacyjne, staże i stypendia oraz współpraca z innymi instytucjami (wymiana, wypożyczenia międzybiblioteczne, konsorcja, biblioteki cyfrowe, bazy danych).

The American Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest network of museums and research centers. The article describes the activity of Smithsonian Libraries, which in turn create the largest world system of museum libraries. The history of Libraries and such issues as: finance, digitizing collections, cataloging of collections, educational programs, internships and scholarships, as well as cooperation with other institutions (exchange, interlibrary loans, consortia, digital libraries, databases) are presented.
