The article reacts to a document by the International Theological Commission on Trinitarian monotheism and its opposition to violence. The author points out numerous imperfections in methodology and facts within the document. The article criticizes the imperfections and consequently attempts to supply deficiencies. The core of the article is an analysis of the notion that three divine persons subsist in one divine nature. The author demonstrates certain serious problems which are hidden within this notion, while presenting W. Kasper’s and M. Bordoni’s critical approach to P. Schoonenberg’s views from the 1960s and 1970s. The article contains in summary not only clarifications of certain aspects of the theological reflection concerning the unity of humanity, but also an appeal to colleagues to join up with the letter addressed to the International Theological Commission which would express the view of Czech theologians regarding the last achievement of the Commission.

The article deals with the newest document of the International Theological Commission “God the Trinity and the Unity of Humanity. Christian Monotheism and its Opposition to Violence”. Concretely, its use of the Bible is analyzed. The document focuses, on the one hand, on the most important biblical message: God initially offers salvation to Israel, and consequently to the whole of humankind; he overcomes the law of revenge through the cross of Jesus Christ and does so without compromising truth and justice. It discusses, on the other hand. the violence in the Old Testament too superficially and completely neglects all controversial pericopes of the New Testament (e.g. the cleansing of the Temple, the prophecy about bringing fire to the earth). If the International Theological Commission does not deal with these issues, it risks a criticism of being too eclectic and presenting Christianity in an embellished, but unreal way.

The aim of the article is to present the document Theology Today: Perspectives, Principles and Criteria by the International Theological commission from the point of view of biblical scholarship. It firstly shortly introduces the three biblical scholars involved in the preparation of the document and makes certain general remarks about its connection to exegesis. It consequently discusses closely the Biblical basis of the twelfth criterion proposed: theology as wisdom and as science. Finally, it connects certain conclusions to the contemporary situation of theology in the pluralistic world.

The post-conciliar Catholic theology in the West is experiencing a significant crisis of its identity. Theologians take an active part in the contemporary social and political discourse but their academic work is often in opposition to the doctrinal and moral teaching of the Catholic Church. In the document Theology Today issued in 2012, the International Theological Commission presents a positive image of Catholic theology. The document indicates the basic criteria of Catholic theology. It also emphasises the relationship of theology with the living Christian faith and the vocation of theologians to preach the faith. The document points out that authentic Catholic theologyis impossible without fidelity to the Church and to its authoritative teaching.

Dogmatic theology should take into account the “knowledge of saints” in which theological elements are often hidden. The article analyses Zofia Tyber’s (Mother Paula, 1890–1963) message in relation to deification theology. An outcome of the searches is compared to the understanding of theosis in contemporary theology (the International Theological Commission and Joseph Ratzinger’s documents). The mystic’s heritage enables one to apply the traditional theory of an “admirable exchange” to Christian existence. Union of a man with God takes place at the level of “exchange of souls” of Christ and a believer. An emphasis laid on the soteriological role of Christ’s soul and on Eucharist in the deification process is especially worthy of attention. Proceeding from Christ’s presence in a human soul after the Holy Communion to a total harmony of mind, will and feelings (idea of a „short path”) is ultimately aimed at.
