The paper deals with research interests of Eugen Jona focused on description of dialects of Novohrad. These dialects - their system, development and functioning - are varieties that Eugen Jona knew from his own experience. Their summarizing description has been preserved in a manuscript of Jona's unfinished monograph Novohradske narecia (Dialects of Novohrad) that was intended to be a part of a complex encyclopaedic work Novohrad. The manuscript of the dialect monograph by E. Jona was published on the occasion of centenary of his birth and from the cognitive point of view besides the description of the system it brings considerable sociolinguistic findings of the author - a shift of many regionally differentiated or territorially defined items towards common Middle Slovak features.

In the 1950s and 1960s Slovak linguistics saw fruitful discussions concerning the issues of word classes, especially of function words (particles, modal words, predicative or the category of state). Professional discussions that very often turned into a controversy helped to prepare good foundations and starting point for modern Slovak linguistics on which were based fundamental works such as Morfologia slovenskeho jazyka - unsurpassed until today - and Slovnik slovenskeho jazyka (1959 - 1968) in the compilation of which Eugen Jona made use of his experience as well. His vast array of professional and scientific knowledge and interests (dialectology, history, language culture, grammar, lexicology and lexicography) ranks him among versatile Slovak linguists of the 20th century. He has substantially contributed to the definition of particles as a separate word class and stabilizing word-class system of the Slovak language.

The paper examines the activity of E. Jona in the field of language culture. The analysis is concentrated on two fields, firstly, on the practical problems of language culture, secondly, on the evaluation of the complete language situation from the thirties up to the eighties of the 20th century. The practical sphere is covered especially by those papers which were published in the periodical Slovenska rec. Some older papers are not relevant to current language situation, but a great number of them solve questions, which are problematic even nowadays. Very important is the opinion of E. Jona for the question on language correctness or incorrectness. He was persuaded that there is no sufficient only linguists opinion; but very important is a contemporary language usage and also dialects, which are to be taken into the consideration. Further, the paper reflects the views of E. Jona for the complicated language situation after 1945. He believed that forced tendencies to convergences and divergences in the past caused damage to the nation and to the language as well. Several of these problems are topical also nowadays.

According to the author, Eugen Jona is a prominent figure of the generation of professional Slovak linguists and Slovakists that has formed professional scientific research of the Slovak language. E. Jona systematically dealt with the history of Slovak linguistics, historical circumstances of particular philologists and linguists. His in-depth analytical studies were devoted e.g. to works of Anton Bernolak, Ludovit Stur, Joseph Charles Viktorin or Paul Dolezal. Important is his work Notable Slovak Linguists at the Time of Ludovit Stur. Eugen Jona can be regarded as the founder of systematic history of the Slovak linguistics as an autonomous linguistic discipline. The author appreciates the participation of Prof. Jona in forming the standard of contemporary literary Slovak language - and also his lexicographical work and behaviour in the team of authors who wrote out the Directory of Slovak spelling rules issued in 1953. The author is personally grateful to Prof. Jona for commemoration of the work by E. Pauliny (Intention of Verbal Process), which is an original theoretical platform of the Slovak linguistic research.

The paper presents theoretical and methodological solutions and a concrete analysis of elaboration of entries in an unfinished Slovnik spisovneho jazyka slovenskeho (Dictionary of Standard Slovak Language) - his incomplete first volume contains entries a - juzny - that had been prepared by Anton Janosik and Eugen Jona. 63 parts of this dictionary were published in 1946 - 1949 by Matica slovenska. A conclusion that comes out from the analysis of the theory and practice of the dictionary, proves that Eugen Jona by his creative participation on the work has significantly contributed to the development of the Slovak lexicology and lexicography.
