This article discusses reflections on prison in the work of Jan Zahradníček (1905–1960). To present a more comprehensive picture, the author has chosen to compare and contrast the means of reflecting on prison in Dům strach and Čtyři léta with the collections of verse Faeton, Zápisy z Malú and Dopisy z dolu Pluto by the poet František Daniel Merth (1915–1995), since, in addition to their writing about prison, both Zahradníček and Merth were devoutly Roman Catholic.
