Literary texts presented to children during Polish as a foreign language classes must be suitable for the purposes of the lesson as well as the learners’ language competence, interests and intellectual and cognitive abilities. Brzechwa’s poems about animals are of great educational and didactic value. The animals represent different features reflected in certain idiomatic expressions that create the linguistic image of the world. Brzechwa’s poems can be used for various linguistic exercises; they can also inspire children to create their own texts.

The article presents a publishing review of Antoni Lange’s collected poetry written by Jan Brzechwa. Lange’s poems were published in 1950 by the “Czytelnik” Publishing House, which at that time Brzechwa cooperated with. The manuscript of the review from 1980 was given over by the poet’s widow, Janina Brzechwa, to Adam Mickiewicz Museum of Literature in Warsaw (pressmark: 705, k. 41-42).

In the article, as based on the examples of Jan Brzechwa’s tales translations, the author makes an attempt to assess the publication of Lviv’s publishing house Vydavnytstvo Staroho Leva entitled “Na zemliakh Berhamotakh (On the Islands of Bergamuts).” The paper starts with an analysis of the Polish original poems and their translation into Ukrainian by Neonila Stefurak, to present her creativity and methods of translation. Subsequently, referring to illustrations enclosed into the book, it portrays the artistic style of Oleh Petrenko-Zanevs'ki whose drawings are an inseparable element of the edition, influencing both the reception and the interpretation of the literary text.

The aim of the article is to examine how proper names are delivered in the translation of J. Tuwim and J. Brzechwa’s poems for children into Russian. There appear so-called „sings of unfamiliarity” in the structure of the rendered text. They are connected with the change of a group of recipients of the poetry. We can talk about adaptation or exoticisation depending on the presence or lack of the „sings of unfamiliarity”. The presented analysis shows that there are more adaptation technignes (used in the translation of the verse). Owing to this strategy, the rendering corresponds with the age of the special reader and their perception of the world.

The authors of the article explore the concept of milestones in the research on the development of Polish children’s and young adult literature which has been derived from international, mainly English-language studies. This concept is given consideration with regard to prose and in the context of modernity understood as a cultural formation. The literary works which in the first half of the 20th century revealed a breakthrough character are exemplified by Przygody Sindbada Żeglarza [The Adventures of Sindbad the Sailor] and Klechdy sezamowe [Sesame Tales] by Bolesław Leśmian (both published in 1913), the King Matt duology (1923), Kiedy znów będę mały [When I Am Little Again] (1925), and Kajtuś czarodziej [Kaytek the Wizard] (1934) by Janusz Korczak and Akademia Pana Kleksa [Professor Inkblot’s Academy of Wonders] (1946) by Jan Brzechwa. The authors discuss the novelty of these works in terms of their content and form as well as their influence on the development of Polish children’s and young adult literature.

Autorzy artykułu proponują w badaniach nad rozwojem rodzimej literatury dziecięcej i młodzieżowej koncepcję kamieni milowych, zaczerpniętą z międzynarodowych badań w tej dziedzinie (zwłaszcza ze studiów anglojęzycznych). Ta kwestia zostaje rozważona w odniesieniu do prozy i w kontekście nowoczesności (rozumianej jako formacja kulturowa). Jako dzieła literackie, które miały charakter przełomowy w pierwszej połowie XX w., zostają wskazane utwory Bolesława Leśmiana (Przygody Sindbada Żeglarza i Klechdy sezamowe; oba tomy wydane w 1913 r.), Janusza Korczaka (dylogia o Królu Maciusiu, 1923, Kiedy znów będę mały, 1925, oraz Kajtuś Czarodziej, 1934) i Jana Brzechwy (Akademia Pana Kleksa, 1946). Autorzy omawiają nowatorstwo treściowe i formalne tych utworów oraz ich wpływ na rozwój polskiej literatury dziecięcej i młodzieżowej.
