The notary’s office in Poland has existed since 12th century and initially operated under canon law. Separation and independency initiated at the end of 16th century. Main character of the article, Jan Nepomucen Gustowski, ran a notary office between 1917–1952 and was subject to the political changes of the time.

Notariusz Jan Nepomucen Władysław Gustowski pełnił swą funkcję w latach 1917–1952 kolejno w Brześciu Kujawskim i w Gostyninie. Jego działalność przypadała na czasy zaboru rosyjskiego i PRL, z przerwą na czas okupacji niemieckiej. Najdłużej pracował w Gostyninie. Oprócz prowadzenia kancelarii angażował się w działalność patriotyczną i społeczną. W 1952 r., w związku z upaństwowieniem kancelarii notarialnych, został pozbawiony możliwości wykonywania zawodu.
