Artykuł poświęcony jest wizerunkowi Paragwaju w polskiej prasie naukowej i popularnej. Materiałami źródłowymi były zarówno encyklopedie, jak i beletrystyka, które utrwalały pewne stereotypy w postrzeganiu Paragwaju. W okresie PRL, podróżnicy i dziennikarze prezentowali uproszczony obraz tego kraju. Paragwaj był przedstawiany jako ubogi, dwujęzyczny kraj z okrutną dyktaturą. Wiele pisano również o czasach prosperity redukcji jezuickich, jak również o yerba mate jako swoistym symbolu Paragwaju. Jednak polityka brała górę nad kulturą. W Polsce Państwo to jest postrzegane jako egzotyczny kraj przemocy i ignorancji.

This article deals with Paraguay in Polish scientific and popular press. It comprises encyclopaedic writings as well as fictitious literature in which Paraguay appears as a stereotype. During the socialist period, the travellers and journalists described Paraguay as a relatively idealised place. Paraguay was presented as a country under cruel dictatorship, while poverty and bilingualism were emphasised. The authors also referred to the prosperous Jesuit era describing persistent traditions, with yerba mate as an emblem. The politics prevailed over the culture. Also, the Polish accepted more frequently critical texts on Paraguay. They still perceived the country as a half-exotic state as well as half-lost in the mist of violence and ignorance.
