German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, later Pope Benedict XVI, is one of the greatest Catholic theologians of the 20th and 21st century. The main field of his theological activity is fundamental theology, which is perceived by him as the area of a broadly understood dialogue on the credibility of Christianity in the modern world. This article attempts to analyze the views of Joseph Ratzinger/ Benedict XVI on the Christian identity of Europe. The various issues of this study are as follows: Europe as a phenomenon of cultural interaction; Right to the place of Christianity in the Europe of tomorrow; European crisis of values; European Homo oeconomicus and the Gospel; Dismissing former Eurocentrism; Courage in the struggles of the new face of Christian Europe. In the conclusion the author emphasizes validity of Joseph Ratzinger’s/ Benedict XVI’s thoughts on the future of Europe in the context of the ongoing changes in the European Union and the migration crisis.

Der deutsche Kardinal Joseph Ratzinger, später Papst Benedikt XVI., gehört zu den herausragendsten katholischen Theologen des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts. Der wichtigste Bereich seiner theologischen Aktivität ist die Fundamentaltheologie, die er als die Plattform eines breitgefächerten Dialogs über die Glaubwürdigkeit des Christentums in der heutigen Welt versteht. Der vorliegende Artikel stellt ein Versuch der Analyse des Gedankenguts von Joseph Ratzinger/Benedikt XVI. bezüglich der christlichen Identität Europas dar. Die einzelnen Fragen des Artikels sind folgende: Europa als ein Ereignis der kulturellen Interaktion; Daseinsrecht des Christentums im Europa von morgen; europäische Krise der Werte, europäischer homo oeconomicus und das Evangelium; Abschied vom alten Eurozentrismus; Mut im Tauziehen um ein neues Gesicht des christlichen Europas. Zum Schluss verweist der Autor auf die Aktualität des Gedankenguts von Joseph Ratzinger/Benedikt XVI, über die Zukunft von Europa im Kontext der gegenwärtigen Umwälzungen in der Europäischen Union und der Migrationskrise.

Niemiecki kardynał Joseph Ratzinger, później papież Benedykt XVI, należy do najwybitniejszych teologów katolickich XX i XXI wieku. Główną dziedziną jego teologicznej aktywności jest teologia fundamentalna, która pojmuje on jako płaszczyznę szeroko pojętego dialogu o wiarygodności chrześcijaństwa we współczesnym świecie. Niniejszy artykuł podejmuje próbę analizy poglądów Josepha Ratzingera/Benedykta XVI dotyczących chrześcijańskiej tożsamości Europy. Poszczególne zagadnienia tego opracowania są następujące: Europa jako zjawisko kulturowej interakcji; Prawo do miejsca chrześcijaństwa w Europie jutra; Europejski kryzys wartości; Europejski homo oeconomicus a Ewangelia; Pożegnać dawny eurocentryzm; Odwaga w zmaganiach nowe oblicze chrześcijańskiej Europy. W zakończeniu autor wskazuje na aktualność myśli Josepha Ratzingera/Benedykta XVI na temat przyszłości Europy w kontekście bieżących przemian w Unii Europejskiej i kryzysu migracyjnego.
