Studio Filmowe im. Karola Irzykowskiego zostało założone przez grupę młodych filmowców w 1981 r. w celu produkowania debiutów filmowych. Choć instytucja ta była wpisana w ramy oficjalnych struktur kinematografii, w zasadzie funkcjonowała poza nimi. Podlegała bezpośrednio Ministerstwu Kultury i Sztuki, ale jej władze (wybierana demokratycznie Rada Artystyczna składająca się z pięciu młodych twórców) mogły samodzielnie podejmować decyzje dotyczące produkcji filmowej. Dlatego też polityka Studia mogła być bardziej niezależna niż np. zespołów filmowych. W 1984 r. zmieniła się struktura organizacyjna Studia; w latach 1985-1989 utraciło ono znaczące przywileje, przez co przestało się właściwie różnić od zespołów filmowych. Miało to wpływ na działalność producencką Studia w tym okresie. Celem artykułu jest odpowiedź na pytanie, jak decyzje personalne, polityczne i instytucjonalne wpłynęły na organizację i politykę programową Studia w latach 1981-1989.

The Karol Irzykowski Film Studio was founded by a group of young filmmakers in 1981 to produce film debuts. It functioned within the framework of official state structures, yet at the same time it was situated outside them. It was directly subordinate to the Ministry of Culture and Arts, but it could make independent decisions concerning the production of film scripts and acceptance of the final versions of films. The studio was managed by an artistic council, democratically elected by its members; it was formed by five young filmmakers who had a final say in the decisions concerning film production. Therefore, the policy of the Karol Irzykowski Film Studio was far more independent than, for example, in the case of state-controlled film companies known as “film units”. During martial law, Mieczysław Waśkowski, a film director who had won the trust of state authorities, became the studio’s commissioner, and as early as 1984 its organizational structure changed. In 1985-1989, the studio lost several of its initial privileges and therefore in terms of functioning no longer differed from other film units. This obviously influenced its activity in terms of film production. The aim of the article to address the following question: How did personal, political, and institutional decisions influence the organization and thematic content policy of the Karol Irzykowski Film Studio?

Artykuł jest próbą zrekonstruowania powstania oraz analizą działalności i strategii programowej – założonego w 2008 r. przy Stowarzyszeniu Filmowców Polskich – Studia Munka. Podstawowe pytanie badawcze, jakie stawia sobie autor tekstu, dotyczy dialogu produkcyjnego między pokoleniami, których przedstawiciele byli inicjatorami powstania studiów mających produkować filmy młodych reżyserów. A zatem: jak idea Studia Munka koresponduje z – zasłużonymi dla historii polskiego kina – instytucjami filmowymi, takimi jak zespoły filmowe, Studio Filmowe im. Karola Irzykowskiego czy Filmowe Studio Młodych im. Andrzeja Munka, działające na przełomie lat 70. i 80. w strukturach TVP?

The article is an attempt to reconstruct the creation and analyse the activity and strategy of the Munk’s Studio, created in 2008 by the Polish Filmmakers Association. The basic research question posed by the author of the text concerns the dialogue on film production between the generations, whose representatives were the initiators behind the opening of the studio dedicated to the production of work by young film directors. So how does the idea of Munk’s Studio correspond with the – meritorious for the history of Polish cinema – film institutions, such as Film Groups, Karol Irzykowski Film Studio or Film Studio for the Young named after Andrzej Munk, and operating at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s in the structures of Polish Television?
