The article attempts to reread the canonical work of Polish children’s literature. It perceives its protagonist, Koziołek Matołek, as a sage and insightful observer of the world, whose disguise of a fool allows him to distance himself from it. Hence, Przygody Koziołka Matołka [The Adventures of Matołek the Billy‑goat] might also serve didactic purposes when it comes to the young readers in the 21st century; these might learn from it how to laugh at themselves or dissociate from problems, which are indispensable qualities regardless of the times we live in.

Autorzy śledzą niezbadane dotąd losy wydań przygód Koziołka Matołka – kanonicznego przykładu polskich książek obrazkowych dla dzieci Kornela Makuszyńskiego i Mariana Walentynowicza czasu II wojny światowej (w Palestynie) i tuż po niej (w nadreńskim Lippstadt) w kontekście polskiego życia uchodźczego (w szczególności kulturalno-oświatowego) na Bliskim Wschodzie i w Niemczech Zachodnich. Analizy badawcze skupiają się na okolicznościach publikacji, mechanizmach wydawniczych, problematyce adaptacji i modyfikacji graficznych, funkcjach edukacyjnych oraz zakresie oddziaływania czytelniczego tych inicjatyw w kontekście ówczesnych masowych migracji oraz wymiany międzykulturowej. Nadto w aspekcie interpretacyjnym peregrynacyjny charakter podstawowego wątku fabularnego wydaje się konweniować z ówczesnym kontekstem społeczno-historycznym naznaczonym powszechnym i masowym doświadczeniem migracyjnym, co dodatkowo współtworzyło przestrzeń dla edukacyjnych ofert w ramach polskiego uchodźczego życia oświatowego o wymiarze interkulturowym.

The authors trace the previously non-examined history of the editions of Kornel Makuszyński and Marian Walentynowicz’s adventures of Matołek the Billy Goat (canonical example of Polish children’s picturebooks) published during the Second World War (in Palestine) and immediately after it (in Lippstadt, Germany) in the context of the life of Poles in exile (in particular in the aspect of culture and education) in the Middle East and West Germany. Research analyses are focused on the circumstances and mechanisms of publication, adaptation and graphic modification, educational functions and the scope of the reading impact of these initiatives in the context of the mass migrations of the time and intercultural exchange. Also, as far as the interpretative aspect is concerned, the peregrinatory nature of the main plot line seems to convene with the socio-historical context of the day, marked with the common mass experience of migration, which additionally co-created space for intercultural educational offers as a part of the educational life of Poles in exile.
