The site of Kharaib el-Desht on Failaka Island, Kuwait, was explored by an archaeological Kuwaiti–Polish team for the first time in 2013. The project included a survey and underwater archaeological research. Preliminary results indicate a dating of the site to the late Islamic period. Pottery collected from the survey of the site and from the excavations has been studied in a sepearate appendix to this report. As for the underwater and waterfront archaeology project, the main objective was to locate and describe seashore archaeological sites, provide documentary evidence and manage proper preservation of the discoveries in order to further educational opportunities.

Excavation at the site of Kharaib el-Desht on Failaka Island, Kuwait, began in 2013 and continued in 2015 and 2016. The second season focused on the northwestern part of the site, namely Areas 1 and 4. In the third season, work also encompassed the southeastern part of the site, Area 3, where the exploration of a stone structure was resumed. A fragment of a residential complex was also unearthed in this area. Test trenches, opened inside the stone structure and below the foundation level of the residential remains, confirmed the existence of an earlier phase, predating the Desht settlement.

This quasi-experiment examined the impact of the jigsaw cooperative learning technique on enhancing the speaking skill of Kuwaiti student-teachers of English. In the first semester of 2019/2020, 40 female students enrolled in a Conversation Course were divided equally into control and experimental groups based on an oral presentation task (pre-test). Data was assessed through a speaking skill competency rubric (vocabulary, accuracy, fluency, and pronunciation). The post-test results indicated statistically significant differences between the means of the participants in favor of the experimental group. A pre-post experiment questionnaire was also administered to identify students’ attitudes towards the jigsaw technique. SPSS program was used for data analysis. The t-test results showed a positive attitude of the experimental group towards cooperative learning and the jigsaw technique. It isrecommended to use the jigsaw technique to improve students’ speaking skills.

This article attempts to answer the question of how much US politicians, in the wake of the Iraqi aggression on Kuwait, were aware of the upcoming events and whether they were able to influence Baghdad politics and create new peaceful solutions. The content of this article is also to convince that it is hard to blame the American ambassador April Glaspie that during a conversation with the Iraqi dictator on July 25 1990, she gave Saddam a ‘green light’ to attack his neighbor. Same position as her, presented a bit later in his letter to Saddam, US president George W. Bush or undersecretary J. Kelly — speaking in the US Congress. To sum up, this article wants to convince the reader that the United States did not have a thought-out, effective and forward-looking policy, not just for Iraq but for the whole Middle East, but seemed to wait for what the course of events would bring while being deeply involved in Europe, where the dismantling of the Soviet Bloc and reunification of Germany took place.

The sample of the study consisted of 60 male students, equally divided into two groups, experimental and control ones. The result of the study indicated that there were statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental group and the control one in the post achievement level test scale in favor of the experimental group. The effect size of using mind maps was high. There were statistically significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental and control group scores in the post achievement test of the Arabic vocabulary learning in favor of the experimental group. This article opens with some brief observations on the phenomenon of Arab blackface-that is, of Arab actors “blacking up” to impersonate black Arab or African characters-from classic cinematic portrayals of the warrior-poet Antara Ibn Shaddad to more recent deployments of blackface in the Arab entertainment industry. It then explores the complex nexus of race, gender, citizenship and social status in the Arabian Gulf as context for a critical reflection on the author’s experience of reading and discussing Othello with students at the American University of Kuwait-discussions which took place in the fall of 2019, in the midst of a wave of controversies sparked by instances of Arab blackface on television and in social media.
