The collaboration between biblical studies and art history is manifested in developing methods of visual exegesis that use the methodological principles of iconography and iconology. This text briefly outlines possible overlaps in the study of the theme of the sacrifice of the lamb. Above all, however, it focuses on the extraordinary complexity and sophistication of the pictorial programs of selected medieval works of art with this theme. On the one hand, the symbolic meanings and narrative contexts of the image of the lamb are anchored in biblical texts that have been canonized for centuries, thus establishing a continuity of meaning that transcends actual historical contexts. On the other hand, this complex set of references becomes the subject of artistic interpretations that have evolved historically. While this may raise doubts about the timeless nature of individual motifs, it also provides vibrant possibilities for dialogical encounters in further developing this historical legacy.
