There should be no scope for infantilising children and their abilities by discussing only the easy and pleasant topics which leave no room for argument in modern education systems. It is important to raise difficult issues, pertinent to everyday life in the modern world, in the course of the education process. From an early age, the education process in Sweden is aimed at developing the ability to critically evaluate oneself, interact with the outside world, and develop problem-solving skills related to environmental and social issues. This article deals with the issues of education for sustainable development and presents examples of practical solutions for organising the learning space conducive to the implementation of the concepts for sustainable development in selected Swedish nursery schools and schools.

Thesis/Objective – The author analyzes the concept of the library space in research libraries as exemplified in Polish and foreign literature of the field with reference to the development of a learning center. The example discussed is the learning center in Helsinki University Library visited by the author. Conclusions – The development of learning centers in research libraries is a response to the growing needs of the academic community and extends the contemporary scope of library functions. It is tightly related to the adjustment of the library space to the needs of the library users.

Cel /metoda badań – Praca przedstawia analizę pojęcia przestrzeni bibliotecznej w bibliotekach naukowych w polskiej i zagranicznej literaturze bibliotekarskiej w kontekście powstania centrum nauki. Odniesiono się do centrum nauki w Bibliotece Uniwersyteckiej w Helsinkach, w której autorka miała okazję przebywać na stażu. Wnioski – Powstanie centrum nauki w bibliotekach naukowych było odpowiedzią na potrzeby społeczności akademickiej i jest rozszerzeniem dotychczasowego zakresu działalności bibliotek. Wiąże się z dostosowaniem przestrzeni bibliotecznej do potrzeb użytkowników.
