The highest level of cinema attendance in Lower Silesia after World War II was recorded in 1957. It was higher than before the war and lower than during the war. In the years that followed it steadily declined, influenced by global processes, especially the popularity of television. This leads us to reflect on the continuity of historical and film processes, and to look at the period from the 1920s to the 1960s as the ‘classical’ period in the history of cinema, when it was the main branch of mass entertainment. The examples of three Lower Silesian cities of different size classes (Wroclaw, Jelenia Gora, Strzelin) show how before World War II the development from ‘the store cinema [or the kintopp] to the cinema palace’ proceeded. Attention is also drawn to the issue of the destruction of cinematic infrastructure and its post-war reconstruction. In 1958 the press commented that ‘if someone produced a map with the towns marked in which cinemas were located, the number would increase as one moved westwards’. This was due to Polish (post-war) and German (pre-war) cinema building. The discussion closes with a description of the Internet Historical Database of Cinemas in Lower Silesia, which collects data on cinemas that once operated or are now operating in the region.

The main purpose of this article is to portray the complex mechanism of taming the strangespace of Lower Silesia in Zyta Oryszyn’s polyphonic novel Saving Atlantis. The central issue underdiscussion is the analysis of the multifaceted categories of familiarity and strangeness in the literaryrepresentation of space created by the author. Another important point considered is the answerto the question whether, and to what extent, the acceptance of the new reality and identification withthe new homeland are possible. Finally, the process of searching or reconstructing one’s own identityis illustrated as situated between a tragedy and a new beginning, between the Polish and the Germanidentities, between familiarity and strangeness.

The article is concerned with the history of the public libraries of Lower Silesia in the postwar period. The upper time limit for the presented analysis and reports is the year 1975, when the administrative reform changed the territorial structure of the voivodeship libraries. Within the 30 years after the war, the libraries of Lower Silesia gathered a wide collection of both fiction and non-fiction books, as well as the documents of social life. The structure of the libraries collections was adjusted to the needs of the readers from the different regions of the country. Thanks to those virtues, public libraries had a chance to become an important element of their towns’ cultural system. Accommodation facilities allowed for active participation in education processes and served the development of the social life.

Historical residential complexes containing castles, mansions, palaces, parks and farms, are an important part of the cultural heritage of Lower Silesia. It is a big collection diversified in terms of historical and aesthetical values. Despite this, after 1945 they were not covered by a special protection and were subject to a number of factors adversely affecting their state of preservation. This was especially true of undeveloped buildings and of those lacking responsible owners. The biggest damage done in historical objects was the result of human activities, which consisted of both intentional devastation and failure to carry out adequate repair and renovation in accordance with the principles of conservation. The destruction of monuments was intensified by the atmospheric phenomena such as rain, high winds, high temperatures, frost, floods and fire.

The lack of a unified system of description of vessels types of the Funnel Beaker culture in Lower Silesia means that heterogeneous terminology prevents precise classification of ceramic forms found at sites of the culture. The paper presents a proposition of a classification of vessels types of the Funnel Beaker culture developed on the basis of analyses of artefacts from Lower Silesian sites. It has been constructed in a way that enables its complement in case of new discoveries, not falling within the present scope.

This article identifies the forms of updating and constructing the memory of the Eastern Borderlands through material objects, referring to Jan Assmann’s concept of cultural memory, memory of the things and the process of exceeding places from the space. These considerations are supported by the statements of the formerly residents of the Eastern Borderlands taken from interviews conducted by me in 2010–2012 in Lower Silesia. Described objects as earth, spoons, rugs and Christmas decorations create symbolical, but based on the living memory milieux de mémoire in contrast to the objects placed in the chambers of memory and museums of Borderlands, which are institutionalizing and typing in the historical process the image of Borderlands, being a lieux de mémoire according to the concept of Pierre Nora.

The aim of the article is to analyze the process of public e-communication in the so-called first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, i.e., between March and August 2020. The selection of the studied cases – seventy-two small towns in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship – allows for the following hypothesis: there is a certain model of public e-communication about the COVID-19 pandemic based on specific: (1) institutional and legal solutions; (2) instruments; (3) thematic threads. The use of several different, though complementary, research methods (comparative analysis, content analysis, questionnaire) leads to the conclusion that the hypothesis can be confirmed only partially. It turns out that the process of e-communication between small towns and the internal environment (inhabitants) is based on certain truncated "components", which does not change the fact that these towns also perceive the need to exchange content (in the form of text, graphics, audio or video) on the nature of the COVID-19 pandemic and related changes and limitations.

The article discusses the issue of Jewish orphanages located in Lower Silesia and subordinate to the Central Committee of Jews in Poland in the years 1945–1950. It focuses attention on the educational system adopted in the institutions in Bielawa, Niemcza, Pieszyce, and Legnica (from the Korczak idea to adopting the socialist ideology), as well as on activities that were meant to pass the “Jewish spirit” on to the pupils and provide them with something resembling a family home.

The objective of the present study is to identify rules governing the distribution and thematic structure of creative activities, using the region of Lower Silesia in southwestern Poland as an example. This empirical study is based on the data obtained from the Central Registration and Information on Business (CEIDG) as of 2018. Rural areas (compared to cities) generally display a lower level of economic activity. Analysis results confirm that craft-based activities are usually carried out outside large cities. A clear structure of specialisation among creative activities indicates that rural areas should mainly undertake activities that are consistent with the character of a particular local setting and are strongly connected with local conditions.

Nationalization and the introduction of state-controlled economy led to the emergence of abnormal social phenomena, including system-specific crimes. Economic transformations were the foundation of the systemic revolution carried out in the first decade after the Second World War, therefore they were the subject of interest for the Ministry of Public Security. That is why financial crimes were treated just like political crimes, which was also justified by legal provisions, as no specific definition of this type of crime existed. This allowed the authorities (secret police, prosecutor’s office, courts, media) to interpret the events according to their will and current political needs, and, as a result, to administer various overt or covert repressions (death penalty, imprisonment, forced cooperation with the secret police).

The paper contains the comments of an archaeologist on the results of dating the Bronze and early Iron Age burial ground in Domasław, Wrocław district by the 14C method. Most of the dates obtained correlate well with previous archaeological dating to the Bronze and early Iron Age. There are, however, a few exceptions (namely, the stylistic characteristics of grave inventories) in which the established typological classification contrasts with the radiocarbon dates determined for these features and situates them much earlier, largely during the period of the Tumulus cultures in Polish territory in the II period of the Bronze Age in the periodization by O. Montelius/J. Kostrzewski and BC and BD in the southern periodization system. Similarly, several other assemblages from the youngest phase of the use of the burial ground from the HC period obtained much older dates.

This paper answers the question about the alternatives to the European Union membership (and its consequences) conceptualised by the inhabitants of Lower Silesia. To achieve this goal, this text delivers and discusses the empirical data, both quantitative and qualitative, answering the sub-questions if and how their lives have changed as a result of the accession to the EU as well as what are the alternatives, namely: How would our lives have looked like if Poland had not joined the EU in 2004? The article is empirical at its heart. It is built on some fresh data from an extensive research project conducted in 2014 – at the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the EU ‘big bang’ enlargement. At the same time it is the only study conducted in Poland which explores the question of citizens’ perceptions on the Europeanisation effects in such a complex and comprehensive way on the regional level. This study focuses on explaining the Lower Silesians’ opinions exclusively, which allows to see one of the most economically successful regions of Poland in the eyes of its inhabitants.

One of the key issues in evaluating the financial condition of a company is the analysis of assets in relation to the due indebtedness, i.e., short-term obligations. Liquidity ratios calculated in sucha manner help in the drawing of conclusions on the liquidity of the enterprise and its ability to pay its short-term liabilities. This paper examines the financial liquidity in 2005-2007 of a horticultural enterprise, producing and selling food, based on information available in the balance sheet, income statement, and the cash flow statement, as published in the company’s financial reports. The company was selected using the following criteria: location in Lower Silesia, Poland, in a municipal-rural commune, and operating in the agricultural-food sector. The study was based on business books of the examined company. The economic analysis involved mainly the financial liquidity ratios. Additionally, descriptive and comparative methods were used to characterize and interpret the results. The results of the study show that the company had a good financial situation and had no problems with payment of current obligations without waiting for accounts receivable or de-stocking. Additionally, liquidity analysis based on transfers from its operating activity showed that the obligations of the examined company could be covered by money obtained during its operating activities.

This article is an attempt to analyse information about the employment of the disabled in Lower Silesia in the years 2004–2013. The work is based on statistical data provided by PFRON as well as, in part, public statistics from Central Statistical Office for the same period. Due to the fact that these institutions used different methods in gathering information, the pictures they provide are incomplete and, more importantly, sometimes confliicting. There are unfortunately few sources of collected research for the region, which is why new tests and analysis are needed. The article presents the most important results of one of these tests, an attempt to establish the number and characteristics of the disabled working in socially provided jobs in Lower Silesia, showing the barriers that limit their work activity. It also suggests solutions from social politics in regard to the disabled which would be tools in the battle against social exclusion.
