The article discusses a translation of a Carol Shields’s novel Swann. A Mystery (1987) by a Polish poet Ludmiła Marjańska (Zagadka wiecznego pióra, 1998). Marjańska’s translation is not an easy one to assess: it contains some shifts as well as simple mistakes, but Polish versions of lyrics quoted in the novel as written by a mysterious, unacknowledged (and non-existing) poet Mary Swann are undeniably its strongest point. What makes them more interesting, they show close affinity to poems by Emily Dickinson translated by Marjańska – and to her own poetry.

The sketch aims to outline the issues of old age in the poetry of Ludmiła Marjańska. The author of the article focuses on those poems which deal mainly with the disintegration of the physical and inner dimension of the Old Woman, and show the problem of her role and place in society. The indepth existential reflection in the poet’s work not only points to the issue of the self-identification of the subject, but also refers to questions concerning the evanescence connected to the tragedy of the human condition.

The article traces Polish translations of Dickinson’s poetry preceding and following the publication in the nineteen nineties of 200 poems by Emily Dickinson translated by Stanisław Barańczak. It comments on some Polish poets’ response to Dickinson in their own works and points to the growing body of publications online of private selections from Dickinson’s poems previously translated by established Polish poets (mostly Barańczak or Marjańska) as well as translations and original poems inspired by Dickinson’s work authored by less known poets, amateur translators and lovers of poetry. The article suggests that the increased Polish interest in Dickinson’s work is not only a kind of domino effect following Barańczak’s impressive translations. It also results from the growth of interest in translation studies and skills and must be related, too, to the fact that her poetry of private sensibility confronted with a dramatically changing world resonates with contemporary experience of the sensitive individual.

Tajemnica poezji i wiersza Moore zostaje zilustrowana krytyczną analizą przekładów Poetry autorstwa polskich tłumaczy: Jarosława Marka Rymkiewicza, Jana Prokopa, Julii Hartwig, Stanisława Barańczaka i Ludmiły Marjańskiej, które są wraz z oryginałem przytoczone w aneksie.

Publikujemy jeden z ważniejszych tekstów poetologicznych Hansa Ulricha Gumbrechta, w którym pokazał, jak pewne formalne aspekty poezji umożliwiają nieoczekiwane doświadczenia temporalne. Oto podczas lektury konkretnego wiersza pod wpływem prozodii czas staje w miejscu, a przeszła chwila staje się na nowo obecna. Gumbrecht łączy swoje rozpoznanie z sytuacją współczesnych czytelniczek i czytelników literatury, którzy, jak zauważa, zamieszkują od jakiegoś czasu osobliwą, rozszerzającą się teraźniejszość. Doświadczenia takie jak lektura wiersza dają punkt zaczepienia ich życiu, stając się „czymś małym, pozwalającym (…) utrzymywać się w świecie powszechnej przygodności, czasowej mobilizacji i przestrzennej nieostrości.

This essay combining literary history and translation criticism focuses on “Poetry,” the programmatic poem by outstanding American modernist poet Marianne Moore. It draws the reader’s attention to the most important interpretative issues in the work, including the poet’s attempt to enunciate the basically “inexpressible” essence of poetry and phenomenon of its functioning. The mystery of poetry and of Moore’s poem are illustrated through a critical analysis of Polish translations by the following translators: Jarosław Mark Rymkiewicz, Jan Prokop, Julia Hartwig, Stanisław Barańczak, and Ludmiła Marjańska, which are provided in an appendix together with the original.
