Alexander I Romanov is an important figure in the history of charity in Russia. This tsar contributed to the establishment of many philanthropic institutions and supported the development of private charitable organizations. The efforts of the ruling family (Maria Feodorovna, Elizabeth Alexeievna) lead to an increase in charitable activity aiming at the improvement of the situation of the poor, homeless and orphaned in almost the entire Russia. This increase was also indicative of Alexander’s liberal pro-social policy. Private philanthropic initiatives were also an important aspect of this phenomenon. Thanks to the altruism of various persons the necessary help reached the areas in which state institutions could not be developed due to insufficient funds.
