This article deals with Arnost of Pardubice (1297-1364), bishop and the first Archbishop of Prague since 1344. The author summarizes some important aspects of the life and work of this famous figure of Czech history. In the person of Archbishop Arnost we can see a great builder, an open-handed sponsor of art and a very educated organizer of the life in his diocese. However, he was not only the Archbishop of Prague and counselor of Charles IV. But in him we find also a man of deep prayer and respect for the Mother of God. His worship and his sense for holiness can be an inspiration as much for us as it was for the people living more than 600 years ago.

An attentive analysis of the concept of Via Media in the theology of John Henry Newman shows that while his ecclesiological model of the Anglican Church, conceived as a middle way between the extremes of the Roman Catholicism and the popular Protestantism, proved to be only a theory on paper, the theological method, which derived from it, was maintained by Newman throughout his whole theological career, i. e. both in his Anglican and Catholic period. His theological method of balancing and oscillating between various unilateral positions is exemplified in some of his polemical Anglican writings and in his major mariological contribution Letter to Pusey, which paves the way between maximalist and minimalist tendencies. It is suggested that since Newman’s method had a considerable impact on contemporary theology, it could serve as a fruitful means of overcoming hostile polarizations which threaten the Church and society.

The author pays attention to two aspects of the document of the International Theological Commission 'Communion and Stewardship'. The first one refers to a radical refusal of dualism, which brings up some questions both about the theological concept of the origin of a human being and of the further use of Augustine's psychological trinitarian theory. The second aspect is mariological implications of some statements in the document.

After successfully overcoming the post-council crisis, Mariology is unanimously perceived as the „meeting discipline“ of various theological tracts, as „relationship discipline“, and „space for synthesis.“ If the words of the document of the International Papal Marian Academy (The Mother of the Lord, heritage, presence, hope of 2000, p. 22) retain their force, the Blessed Virgin is not only a peripheral element of Christian mystery or the marginal entry of faith and theology. The mystery of Mary studied by Mariology conceals the potential to revive theology (both methodologically and in terms of content) as well as new-evangelistic ecclesiastical proclamation. The article attempts to reveal the ability of Mariology to communicate fruitfully with postmodern theology, analyzed by the fundamental theologian E. Salamann.

This article aims to highlight the exegetical comments that the Greek-Eastern and Latin Fathers proposed with a Christological and Mariological purpose on Ezekiel’s porta clausa before or during the Councils of Ephesus (431), Constantinople (448) and Chalcedon (451). Although at first sight it would seem that such exegeses were a consequence of these Councils. It is clear that many of them are documented earlier, and others occurred more or less by the time in which these Councils took place. All the Greek-Eastern and Latin Fathers agree in interpreting this oriental closed door of the temple in Mariological and Christological terms, in the sense that it is a simultaneous and complementary symbol of the both the virginal divine maternity of Mary and her perpetual virginity, as well as the conception and birth of God the Son made man. As such interpretations are previous or, in the best case, contemporary to the three mentioned Councils, they can not be considered as their consequences, but rather as some antecedents that could have served the Church in those Councils to refute the heresies of Nestorius and Eutychius.
