The gradual reemergence of Mary as a preeminent member of the church began to take formidable shape and scope in the last few years. Because the resurfacing was happening in the context of a balanced theology and piety which attended to scriptural, patristic and biblical roots as well as to pastoral and ecumenical impl ications, it was particular cause for celebration. It was also the primary impetus for gathering a community of scholars to share their significant research with the wider community. If our veneration of Mary is authentic, then we can hope for a new springtime of evangelization, and progress in the cause of Christian unity. „My soul glorifies the Lord”, said Mary in the Magnificat. What Mary did on this occasion, she does every day: when we praise her, love her, honor her, or give to her, God is praised, God is loved, God is honored; we give to God with Mary trough Mary, as Mary and in Mary.

Informed by the theories of Antonio Damasio on the emotional mappings of the mind, the present article probes into the Irish writer Colm Tóibín’s The Testament of Mary (2012), originally written for the stage as a solo play and later adapted into a novella, to disclose the resistance narrative of a grieving mother against the official accounts of the Passion of Christ. The ageing Mary of this text, who is granted voice and body, defies the symbolic representations of female suffering and sorrow that have nurtured cultural history and memory for centuries, and engages in a corporeal rendering of her version, which she intends to leave as her Testament to the world. The shaping of her consciousness is thus substantiated on her embodiment as woman and mother, against the iconic disembodied Virgin Mary that has formed the axis of the Catholic cult of Mariology, ultimately contributing to dissolve the classical dichotomies body/mind and matter/spirit, which will be analysed in depth.

After successfully overcoming the post-council crisis, Mariology is unanimously perceived as the „meeting discipline“ of various theological tracts, as „relationship discipline“, and „space for synthesis.“ If the words of the document of the International Papal Marian Academy (The Mother of the Lord, heritage, presence, hope of 2000, p. 22) retain their force, the Blessed Virgin is not only a peripheral element of Christian mystery or the marginal entry of faith and theology. The mystery of Mary studied by Mariology conceals the potential to revive theology (both methodologically and in terms of content) as well as new-evangelistic ecclesiastical proclamation. The article attempts to reveal the ability of Mariology to communicate fruitfully with postmodern theology, analyzed by the fundamental theologian E. Salamann.
